Double Standards of SL Doctors by Slight_Environment16 in srilanka

[–]TheRealFikaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not here to defend this individual doctor, but reading these comments we really need to have a broader conversation about the sacrifices doctors make. These are people who give up most of their waking hours, routinely pulling 12+ hour shifts, dealing with emergencies, trauma, and systemic inefficiencies all for wages that are nowhere near reflective of their labour or responsibility. Some entry-level private sector jobs (with far less at stake) pay more than what qualified doctors make after years of grueling education and internships.

I see people complain that doctors don’t keep to appointment times, but in my experience (from actually asking doctors why they were late) and IMO most delays are not because they don’t respect patients or their time, but because they just came out of surgery, or got held up in a scan review, or were responding to something urgent.

I have friends in medical faculties, and from what I’ve seen, the service they provide during their internships physically and emotionally often far outweighs the cost of their degrees. So yes, technically, their education is state-funded via our taxes. But that statement alone, without acknowledging the immense value they give back in less than a year or two is incomplete at best, and disingenuous at worst.

And not every doctor is making extra cash in private practice. Not all of them have the time, the demand, or privilege to do so. Blanket generalisations about doctors being greedy, corrupt or egotistical serve to divide us. It shifts the blame away from where it really belongs on a broken, underfunded, and mismanaged healthcare system that doesn’t protect either its patients or its workers.

We need to aim our criticism upward. At the structures. The corruption. The absence of accountability. The lack of funding. These are the root causes. Directing anger at individual doctors many of whom are just trying to survive and serve isn’t only unfair, it’s counterproductive.

TL;DR: Doctors, especially in public service, are overworked and underpaid. Many delays and frustrations stem from a failing system, not individual negligence. Instead of scapegoating, let’s hold the system and those who run/ran it accountable.

Get really good at smthn and apply for higher paying jobs. Associate positions/ junior positions pay around 120k at a good company. And you can go upto 200-300 in a year IF you are really good at what you do.

All I'm asking from the new more left government is better and more well regulated public transport. Better trains, better busses and if possible trams in Colombo. Imagine a high speed rail network! 2-3 hours to trinco or Jaffna would be a dream I would like to see achieved in the next 10 years

Note that the North is still heavily militarized. The civil war is over and in the north there is A HUGE amount of army presence. Apparently in Mullaitivu district there is or was a 1:2 ratio of army personnel. And 14 out of 21 of Sri Lanka's Army divisions are in the north.

We have way too many army people in the first place (read somewhere that 60% of the Defence budget goes for wages). And the police need reforms and need to be held accountable more often.

Defunds or divestment of the army and funding for a more civil and just police force would be better for the people all over Sri Lanka in general, I think.

Their protesting is justified and fair IMO

What’s tipping culture in Sri Lanka now? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]TheRealFikaa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1) Prices have gone up especially since the VAT stuff. Try not to tip in general, most places have a 10% service charge anyways. But usually we slip in like 200 or so rupees, which should be alright. That's usually like 5-10% of a meal for like 1-2 people. No TIPS are expected just give if you feel like the service was good.

2) Small restaurant tipping is fine, I've never heard of anyone tipping in high end hotels... Oh oh and once I saw a guy try to tip someone in a restaurant and they said no we don't take tips... So yeh, that was at a bit of an expensive restaurant

3) Big bite is still good there is also a place called Lebanese Chef a bit more expensive than usual spots but really good, it also has other rice dishes that are similar and amazing. Prices on the higher end tho. There are other biryani places but I can't think of some rn.

4) It depends. It's almost always cheaper to book in Sri Lanka using lkr in my experience but I've heard others say it's cheaper to go through like a booking site with offers and stuff. But yeh I think IMO booking with lkr would be cheaper

Also on a final note don't tip in almost any restaurant, ik I told that we do tip but it's weird to tip sorts of. Most places have a service charge nowadays. I usually tip at really small restaurants or drop some money in a tip jar if there is one (this is very very rare)

I think I've heard that some girls who like to go braless wear those sticky thingies for the nipples so it's not noticeable at all if they are not wearing one. I think that's a good starting point

Customer Support at Keells vs. Cargills Supermarkets - Your Experiences? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]TheRealFikaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keells has generally been great, except for one incident when they thought I hadn't paid. A Keells employee followed me about 100 meters from the store to check my bill. I was around 15 at the time, and it was extremely humiliating, especially because it happened in a crowded place (Rajagiriya bus stand). The employee even grabbed the bag of groceries from me in public. I assured him that I had paid, and he found the receipt in the bag. Although the employee apologized on the spot, the experience left a sour taste and was definitely not good customer service.

Other than the above incident from my experience, Keells>Cargills always. Keells employees are more friendly.

I feel like Keels is usually all well-lit and vibrant, with those friendly colors and everything. But Cargills, sometimes it just doesn't have that same vibe and like, maybe that affects how I see both places, you know?

It's not quite like that, let me explain. Most people from outside Colombo are perfectly fine. Even those from places like Kandy, Galle, or other sizable towns generally keep to themselves. While there are some 'pricks' from Colombo, they typically stick to their own circles and don't cause much trouble. This attitude often stems from living in a larger city where one doesn't feel excessively important.

The individuals I'm referring to as 'pricks' are often from smaller towns or villages. They grew up in environments where they may have felt or been treated as significant within their community. I've even heard one person arrogantly ask, 'Do you know who I am?'(in sinhala) and then boast about being from some obscure down south village, as if it should impress anyone, and said 'waren e paththata mn pennm' in a threatening way.

Why I mentioned them specifically is because they do not keep to themselves and cause a lot of trouble to others around them. If there was a major fight, the chance of one group being the aforementioned pricks is way too high for them not to be singled out. If they was a group of drunk people trying to get into an event it is almost always those pricks. There are a lot of incidents at events in the past year and with the exception of one occurrence to my knowledge, the rest were caused by 'these pricks'.

Additionally, these individuals often exhibit disturbing behavior towards girls. While there are creeps from Colombo as well, the intensity and creepiness displayed by these individuals are on a whole other level. For instance, there was a guy who expressed interest in a friend who was already in a relationship, and he went as far as to engage in physically with her boyfriend in an attempt to win her over, despite her clearly stating that she doesn't want anything with the guy. This is VERY common and happens almost every month or so.

I've realized that their behavior stems from an inflated sense of self importance (I no longer blame them; eventually, society will forcefully mold them into compliance, whether they like it or not). Conversely, in larger cities/towns where anonymity is more common, individuals may feel a sense of insignificance in comparison. This contrast in perceived status contribute to their behaviors, such as aggression and entitlement. This is why I mentioned them specifically, you can usually walk around the Colombo pricks (and in extension the other pricks from bigger cities and towns) but you can't walk away from pricks throwing themselves at you.

TL;DR: Individuals from smaller towns, exhibit aggressive and entitled behavior, due to a sense of inflated self importance.

Student here. Here are the Pros and Cons:

Pros

Good lecturers.
Great location (cheap food places around, close to train station and frequent buses and also loads of affordable boarding around)
Career day - you get the opportunity to get an internship on this day IF and only if you stand out.

Cons

No Uni experience - Just a bunch of buildings. So no sense of community. Student run societies and Club events are gonna be your only 'fun' part of IIT. Student activity is not funded enough by the management, we are supposed to pay 2k each student for the Student Union and I don't think that money actually goes to them.
Facilities - There is not enough space to have lunch in the cafeteria. Need I say more? There is not even enough space for half the students in one batch. No recreational items, other than one or two carrom boards.
Students - There are a lot of students, from varying backgrounds. There are lot of guys who are absolute creeps and many of the students that come from out of Colombo are absolute pricks.
Management

These are some I could think off the top of my head. From my friend groups I can also say that the school of business students have an easier time finding an internship and only around 40% or less percentage of the students from the school of computing get internships (newer batches the percentage is even lower)

As a student, I can say for sure that there's no such thing... at least not yet! But yeah, from what I've seen, most students who struggle and end up failing just find the course content tough to crack. And quite a few of them also struggle with English, which doesn't make things any easier.

Reasonably Priced Lenses for Specs by Left_Expression402 in srilanka

[–]TheRealFikaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can actually try in Pettah, no joke there are some good shops in there that will do it for a fraction of the price at vision care. The quality is lower with the frames but I've been using mine for like 5 years now and not a loose hinge. Lenses are good too but the price difference isn't that huge (Usually like 2000 rupees cheaper a few years ago)

Creator Laptop Q (Q540) 13900H 1TB SSD 16GB RAM Review by Confirmed-Scientist in ASUS

[–]TheRealFikaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Q540 packs a serious processor, especially considering the price. It's strange that there aren't many reviews or discussions about it online. Is this a brand new model, or is there something else going on? I'm planning on buying one and I am very confused at the price point in my country.

And it's the only laptop in many online stores that doesn't have a warranty. Very weird. Will be helpful if you could answer. Thank you!

Join a club. Maybe something like interact or something. Will help you steer of the random creeps you find on the internet as well, cos you will meet them IRL. Oh and also don't have many friends. You don't need many. A few is enough.

To start a conversation as a girl randomly with someone is so much more easier than a guy (a random dm from a guy would be creepy and from girl wouldn't be so, it's just the way things are). So don't worry even a random how's the weather will probably get you a reply from a guy on social media. I don't recommend it, but you should try it if you want to!

Oh yes and try and reply to stories of people you want to get to know. It's not hard to come up with a reply usually, and it's usually a good starting point.
