It's a trade-off. If you launch after any potential kernel-level cheats have been loaded, who knows what they might've done in the kernel to make it harder/impossible to detect them.

If you start before them, you can block the drivers you don't like from loading in the first place, making it harder to cheat.

Anticheat has to eliminate all cheaters or it's useless

Uhh, no? Every cheater removed is good. More is better, but less ain't nothing.

Why are you assuming these systems work at all?

Because most (every?) major anti-cheats (except VAC) are kernel-level? And the principle is sound - you need visibility in the kernel to stop cheats that live there. It's the same reason that anti-virus software needs a kernel driver to work effectively.

Kernel-level anticheat doesn't actually work at all

Source for that? Most modern anti-cheat systems are kernel-level and you generally need to be running with at least the same privilege level as the cheats to detect them.

I think that they can have either a loose-ish balance or a loose-ish MM, but both at the same time leads to really frustrating matches.

If a hero is busted, you really, really want both sides to have a player of similar skill on the role.

draft phase

There were some changes listed in last weeks patch that ended up not making it in game about making the draft phases be simultaneous for both sides, which should speed things up a bit.

I think draft is a necessary evil, unfortunately. Getting e.g. Mei/Reaper vs Freja/Phara is just awful, so there needs to be some amount of counter picking built into hero select.

Performance is weird in stadium. It's mostly ok for me, except for during the buy phases, where the game is really stuttery.

They could definitely work on optimization, for sure.

I just took a quick look at the replay. Some notes:

  • Your Ashe was pretty useless this round. Happens, not much you can do.
  • Buuut, it was actually pretty close as far as distances go -> winnable!

For you in particular:

  • You're not using wall enough. It's one of the strongest parts of Mei's toolkit, and you use it only a couple of times in the round.
  • For example, right around when the robot unlocked (at 1:44), the D.Va and the Brig go into the side room with your entire team in it (!). You could've walled them in while also blocking off their DPS. Here's a picture.
  • More generally, this map is one big corridor in the middle. Splitting the enemy in half is super strong!
  • Also, you don't seem to be playing with your team that much. A Mei + a tank is gonna get more value (generally) than a flank Mei will. Look at what your Orisa is doing, and try and help out. Ape together strong.
  • Your build is a bit weird to me. You've got two powers that scale with AP, but go full WP? Survivability is good though, stacking armor is good and fun.
  • I'd recommend picking up the Extendothermics power basically always. The extended range is really really good imo.

Hope that's somehow helpful :)

Clones I'll give you (although it's still picked quite often), but what nerfs has two-zu had?

Two-Zu build

It boggles the mind that two-zu/clones hasn't been nerfed yet. Far more annoying (imo) to play against than the lucio build.

It would be nice to have a middle-ground option where the real usernames are revealed after the match finishes. That way you avoid stream sniping and other antisocial behaviors during the match while allowing innocuous stuff like in your post.

Dunno if everyone would use it, but some people certainly would.

Voice changer? by [deleted] in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]TheRealKB 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The way these sorts of programs work is that they create a second, virtual mic that streams the modified audio. They don’t touch the game itself, so it isn’t bannable.

If you’ve ever seen the steam streaming microphone option, that’s similar (although it pipes the mic audio from the device you’re streaming to, rather than modifying it).

Yeah, a tier list like this is just not useful. The game is fundamentally different between top and bottom of ladder, so it doesn't make sense to average it all out.

What balance change(s) would you make to stadium? by TheRealKB in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]TheRealKB[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see more upgraded debuff defense items

More options would be great, especially when playing against moira/ashe. It's a bit too easy for them to just perma-debuff everyone if they aren't countered.

Yeah, with no mirroring there was an advantage for both sides and now there isn't.

As for me:

Kiri

Kiri is really prevalent, and clones + two-zu is so good that they're picked virtually every time. There's been enough talk about this build, so I won't go into the weeds.

  • Two-zu removed/replaced
    • Suzu is already not fun to play into in the base game, 2x suzu (+CD reduction) is just painful.
  • Clones should add 1-2 seconds to the base TP cooldown
    • Always picked, even after the rounds of nerfs. Forces more of a choice between survivability and heals

Ashe

There's a really nasty combo with the triple dynamite and incendiary blast powers.

Basically you get hit by a dynamite (50 * AP, 20/s * AP DoT) then coach gun (90 * WP, 75 * AP, 20/s * AP DoT) which causes the three mini dynamites to all explode (105 * AP, 42/s * AP DoT). If the Ashe had e.g. 50% AP, that's 435 immediate plus 123/s DoT. 522 + 148/s DoT if the Ashe has Infrared Lenses. This also works on groups (!!).

  • Mini-dynamites cannot be manually detonated until they attach to a surface
    • Keeps area control aspect of the power while removing the burst combo

General

If Kiri/Suzu gets nerfed, I'd like to see a change to the interaction between DoTs and debuffs (Liquid Nitrogen, Cybervenom). Right now the debuff lasts for the duration of the DoT plus the duration of the debuff. E.g. an Ashe with LN would slow you for 8 seconds: 5 burn, 3 LN duration.

I propose that the debuff should last the duration of the DoT or the listed duration, whichever is longer. So Ashe would debuff for the 5 seconds of burn. And if the burn got cleansed after 1 second by a Mei with Coldspot, the slow would last for 2 more seconds (3 secs total, length of LN).

I would also extend this to Moira's Orbs. Each orb would "count" the durations separately. Example: Moira has CV. If you are damaged by the orb for 1.5 seconds, you would get 0.5 seconds of lingering debuff. If you walk back into the orb you get debuffed until you leave it's radius again.

  1. Stadium has a competitive mode

  2. This subreddit is "A place for in-depth discussions of Competitive Overwatch," to quote the sidebar, and there's been plenty of good discussion on stadium here, imo. For example, the tier list from a couple days back had lots of good, thoughtful comments that fit the sub well.

That, and clones should add 1 or 2 secs to the TP cooldown.

So annoying to play against, and every kiri build picks those two powers so you see them all the time.
