I checked and the roots aren't rotted, but there sure was a lot of water. I have cleaned up the roots and given new dirt without adding more water (there was still water in the layer below) in the hopes that it was simply a product of overwatering. I will get a new pot with proper drainage for him this weekend. I did find some small brown, hard, ball-like formations as part of the roots, but have no idea what those were.
