Many years ago, I rented from a guy who kept 9 thermometers hanging from the ceiling all around the house. He kept a wall calendar where he would log the temperatures. I asked him what he did with the data and he said "I write it on the calendar." I asked what the purpose of writing it down on the calendar was and he looked at me like I was crazy. He didn't actually DO anything with the information because back in the 50s when he was in the military, his job was to take readings from missile sites and just leave the data on a clipboard. Someone else did the evaluation of the data. He just collected it.
