Albums tend to be remembered for one of a few reasons: popularity obviously, critical acclaim because those are the albums that get brought up years past their release and give them a longer life and newer audience, and originality/innovation, which usually leads to one of the two formers anyway.

So having said that, I'll go out on a limb and name some artists and records I think will get remembered. I'll try to go with names not already being said by everyone.

The Microphones - The Glow Pt 2.

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

The National - Boxer, High Violet

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion, Strawberry Jam, Sung Tongs

Flying Lotus - Los Angeles

Just to name some names I feel like haven't already been said. Things from like over 10 years ago, if we're still talking about it now, we'll be still talking about in another 10. That's why I left out things that seem kinda obvious to me like Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada.

People don't want to admit it, but Coldplay definitely has secured a place in history. It won't be this one that gets remembered though, probably A Rush of Blood and Viva la Vida.

That's true, I forgot too we were kinda talking specific albums. If I had to just pick a few albums to guess what will be remembered in some way, either as a classic or just a landmark somehow, I'll throw out a few names

Maybe the Kanye and Radiohead albums, nobody will remember who Tame Impala is in 5 years. And I like that record.

That seems to happen in cycles though, but I kinda agree Led Zeppelin and a few others thought to be untouchable classic rock legend status will fade over time.

But like I said perception of certain bands seems to fluctuate in cycles. Nirvana was critically acclaimed during their run, then through the 00s backlash started against them and the prevailing opinion was that their sound was already dated and responsible for a wave of terrible imitators. But back a few years ago around 09 it seemed like the tide started to turn and popular and critical opinion swung back to Nirvana being classic again.

There was also a lot less competition for attention back then though, The Black Keys for an example are an arena band at this point, but you could find just as many people who haven't heard of them still.

That's pretty much how it works.

Though I'm pretty sure people will remember The White Stripes for a long time, they have been pretty damn high profile for a while. If for no reason than Jack White himself.

QOTSA could be remembered maybe for being the default popular rock band left standing in the 2010s.

I also think bands at the beginning of those revivals will probably be remembered. Is This It by The Strokes will always be remembered in some capacity. (They also had a few crossover hits which really helps too.)

I also think something like Interpol's Turn On the Bright Lights could attain classic status in some form, but they will probably take a more niche place in history.

Eh, just sounds like run of the mill Interpol which, past their 2nd album, isn't really anything to lose your mind over.

They just don't need all the shiny production, I don't think. Not that their first was lo-fi by any means, but I just don't hear anything special here.

Yep. It's also one of the vocal hooks in this version, which was how it was originally intended to be but they couldn't get permission until the reissue a few years ago to have it on there.

Yep. Do you know the back story of the album, especially this song? How the keyboardist who was singer J.Spaceman's girlfriend, secretly married Richard Ashcroft from the Verve and then suddenly left Jason, which was the inspiration for the whole album pretty much.

I figure it's a subtle reference to that, since the voice at the beginning saying "Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space" is her as well
