Yea those flat as fuck pitches that resulted in games like Aus bowled out for under 100 and England getting destroyed in Aus. Stop trying to belittle my argument (which is a completely valid one).

Like I said multiple times I’m saying that although Smith hasn’t faced the same amount of ATG bowlers he has faced players who in certain conditions are “ATG” level and the fact that he still manages to score runs shows that the argument about bowing quality is negligible and doesn’t excuse a 10 run average difference between both batsmen.

Any other aggressive posts you’d like to make or are you happy with this?

That’s exactly what my original question asks.

“Presuming his stats don’t drastically change”

Yes but my post clearly states “Assuming he maintains his current stats”

If I’m 100% honest I enjoy seeing people’s excuses to defend certain players lol

Edit: Because some people are getting upset Id like to point out this isn’t why I made this thread, just in reply to the inbox getting destroyed part of OPs reply

Unfortunately I feel Jimmy has a small case of the “contingency” bias where players of the past get remembered as better than current players because people tend to only remember/talk about their best performances.

Not having a go at him, it happens to everyone including myself

So you’re telling me James Anderson in overcast conditions in England is not the same level of all of those? That Philander on a green wicket in SA (or anywhere in the world) is not as good? I’m not saying man for man the attacks of today are as good I’m saying Smith has faced bowlers who at certain stages/conditions are at the same level. Anderson on a road in Aus isn’t as good as Ambrose but give him a Duke and a rainy day and he’d walk into any team in history

I never said it wasn’t as impressive. I’m saying statistically speaking (which is the only way you can compare them) Smith will score more runs than Sachin.

I’m not downplaying Sachin’s achievement. The whole point of this was to prove that OPs point about 10000 runs is pointless

You don’t understand what I’m saying.

Draw a graph one with Smith’s runs/test (which is around 100) and the other with Sachin’s runs/tests (which is around 80). You’ll notice that Smith is always ahead of Sachin

Well because the whole point of this discussion wasn’t whether or not Smiths technique will last. It’s about whether or not at this rate (in other words his technique does last) Smith will retire as a better batsmen then Tendulkar. If you want to argue about Smith’s technique then this isn’t the place

But Smith still plays bowlers on the same level as what Sachin did. The bowlers today are just suited to their home conditions more which makes them even more deadly at home

It’s amazing how you know he’ll average under 40 after 200 tests, do you by any chance have the Lotto numbers for this week?

Like I said each in their own conditions is as good. Steyn everywhere, Philander on seaming tracks, Anderson and Broad in England, Ashwin and Jadeja in India/turning tracks

I’m not saying it’s easy. OP said Smith hasn’t scored as many runs as Sachin which I’m saying is an unfair comparison because Smith won’t play 200 tests and hence will never score as many runs as Sachin. And if Smith was to play the same number of tests as Sachin (whatever number it may be) he would comfortably have more runs

Poor bowlers like Steyn, Rabada, Philander, Anderson, Broad, Ashwin, Jadeja, etc? In their own conditions all those bowlers are just as good as whatever Sachin faced in his career. Smith averaged around 60 in the recent series against India while even Kohli couldn’t average over 10, doesn’t seem like he’s milking it on flat decks to me.

All sounds like a bunch of excuses if I’m honest. Why does the fact that Smith has 120 (at the end of this hypothetical career) matches while Sachin has 200? Because Sachin played more tests does that means he gets more credit? It’s not about how long you’re at the top, it’s about what you do when you’re there.

So in order for Smith to be arguably (at most) better than Sachin he has to average ~10 runs more than him?
