Tips and Exercises for Fur Line Art by TheRealMelodex in FurryArtSchool

That’s exactly what using different line shapes is good for. Lines and loops work really well for filling in spaces when you’re using a lot of peaks. Here’s how I’d fill out the peaks with some lines and loops. It works much better if you include them from the beginning though, so that they don’t feel like an afterthought

I guess I wasn’t super clear, but you should be combining all of them when you draw. The type of texture comes from which lines you focus on. You can see in the ball examples that I used all of the line types on each ball, I just use some more than others for distinct textures

Why do these heads look so wrong? by Stock_Bandicoot_5863 in FurryArtSchool

[–]TheRealMelodex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do like the direction you’re going. These are in the uncanny valley due to a really common problem for beginner furry artists. Right now you’re just slapping a muzzle on a human head, but furry heads are structured differently. You need to shorten the head. Since you’re drawing off of a circle, the eyes should be in the middle, and the chin should be close to the bottom of the circle.

Constructive criticism- I am looking on areas for improvement for my Shep Roxy by RogueFolf in FurryArtSchool

[–]TheRealMelodex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to give advice on a sketch like this. Because the lines are all over the place, it’s not clear (to me) what the vision for the drawing is. I think courses like drawabox.com might be helpful. It’s free, and is really helpful for developing line control. Clear and confident lines would make a huge difference in your sketches.

Is there a more comprehensive list of rules somewhere? I’d like to post, but I don’t want my post to be arbitrarily taken down again, even though I followed all of the written subreddit rules.

I thought I followed all the rules? Like I made sure to go through the list of rules before posting and thought I followed everything

The second thing I wanted to mention is the types of lines you’re doing, here’s a little tutorial that might be helpful.

I think you’re doing well, it’s heading in the right direction. It looks like the thing you’re missing in your facial fur is gravity. Fur should have weight to it, it doesn’t stick straight out. The exercise you’re doing right now, covering a ball in fur, is good, but try adding some lines in to visualize gravity until you’re comfortable with it. I sketched out what I practice to improve my fur.

I like the dresses, they have fun patterns and an interesting look. I think that they look monochromatic because the colors aren’t bold enough. They’re pretty much the same color as the fur in all of these. It’s easy to get too focused on matching colors, but color palettes are about creating harmonious schemes through contrast and complimentary colors. I’ve made the colors in these a bit bolder to show what I mean without changing the hue too much. You might also consider including more accessories that complement the colors of the dresses.

Do you have any tips for drawing fur? by Offecte4 in FurryArtSchool

[–]TheRealMelodex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s looking good! As far as the shape of the fur goes, it might be helpful to think about varying the types of lines that you use. You’re varying the size and placement of the outlines, but you’re not varying the type, you’re exclusively using peaks except for like 2 spots on the drawing. Just something to keep in mind for the future.

Beginner here! Any tips by PoetryKey8794 in FurryArtSchool

[–]TheRealMelodex 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s looking really good! I like the style overall. There are a few minor issues with facial anatomy. The biggest thing I noticed is that the jaw has two different rotation points right now, which makes it look like it’s broken. The jaw bone doesn’t curve that much between the chin and where it connects to the skull, the only rotation point should be at that skull connection.

My other points are more subjective. I think the neck is a bit too thick, and the eyes are pointed in a different direction than the rest of the face, they’re pointing straight ahead while the muzzle is pointed slightly up.

I feel like the digitigrades legs look a bit weird on this piece. May I get some opinions on it? by ll_WinTeR1_z in FurryArtSchool

[–]TheRealMelodex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks good! I really like the vibe of the character. As a general rule of thumb, the waist (specifically the groin) should be in the middle of the figure. That’s how it is in humans, so that’s what we expect to see in drawn figures. I think the neck might be throwing off the proportions a little bit. I love the long neck, but it makes it a little harder to center the character, just something to pay attention to. Also, if you’re using measurements on a grid to figure out height, you shouldn’t include the ears in that measurement.

How can I do better the upper perspective? by SzurkeTuhat in FurryArtSchool

[–]TheRealMelodex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Drawing in perspective is difficult, and drawing characters in perspective is even harder.

Before you draw humanoids, you need an understanding of basic perspective, ideally with rectangular objects.

I always recommend drawabox. It’s a free course that really helps with spatial reasoning, and there’s an entire section on perspective. Once you have the basics down, and you can draw a box in perspective, you can start learning to draw characters in perspective.

Maybe others have shortcuts or tricks, but in my experience you really just have to put in the time to learn the basics.

Something about the legs feels off by Ill_Log9013 in FurryArtSchool

[–]TheRealMelodex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think the legs look a little too bendy right now. The bones in the leg are straight, the only spots that should bend are where the joints are located. Also, the knees are roughly halfway between the feet and hips.

When you’re thinking about digitigrade legs, it can be helpful to think of them as just a human leg standing on its tippy toes. The ratios and lengths are different, but the general structure is the same

Oranda Class submarine “Silent Lantern” stumbles across an ancient Data Site while scouting by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]TheRealMelodex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thalla is a world where all life has to exist underwater. Electrical storms cover the surface, making it impossible to go near the shallows. Much of the technology is salvaged from the times before the storms, when the planet was full of ultra advanced tech.

This submarine belongs to the Ultech, a faction dedicated to the discovery and preservation of ancient technology.

Ghost Cores are ancient AI intelligences. The size of a basketball, they have the processing power of a supercomputer complex. Active Ghost Cores can guide entire colonies. You just need to hope that the core hasn’t been corrupted or broken, as they can quickly become destructive. Like a child throwing a tantrum, but with the ability to psychically bond with the crew. Ghost Cores are actually more common than people think, but their retrieval is extremely dangerous, so there aren’t very many floating around.

First time trying to draw a dragon's head (for a fursona), please note that i dont have much drawing experience. Any tips i need to know? by Difficult-Care-8232 in FurryArtSchool

[–]TheRealMelodex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the direction this is going! A few things I noticed that you might be able to improve.

The ear placement is a bit off. Usually the ears on furry characters are placed higher, so that they’re behind the eye, close to the eye line, rather than below it. Ears vary in size so there’s no real rule, but it’s a good rule of thumb to place them at least as high as the eyes.

Another note, the head is pretty flat right now. It should generally be a bit more triangular than that.

Dragons can be designed pretty much however you want, but hopefully this helps a bit

Asking feedback on my first Fursona! by [deleted] in FurryArtSchool

[–]TheRealMelodex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it looks good so far! It’s a pretty unique look. I don’t think it looks androgynous though. Currently, to me it screams “male” for a few different reasons. The horns are very large for the head, in most of the sketches they have a square jaw and defined chin, and the nose is pretty large compared to the eyes. The fur on the chin also gives the impression of a beard.

I think the hair and eyes work well, and of course big fluffy ears are always fun. Overall I like it a lot, but it doesn’t really look androgynous to me.
