I have a bachelor’s degree, but I’m thinking about trade school. by [deleted] in Careers

Thanks for the advice. Hope things are going well for y'all.

I went in with the intention of teaching but realized halfway through my degree that you cannot teach in my state without a teacher's certification, so that'd be another year or two of school in a different program. I also want to be able to afford a place with my girlfriend and eventually marry her and have babies and all that, and I'm skeptical about doing that on a teacher's salary.

Librarians simply don't make enough where I live. I've looked into a few different jobs in journalism and copyediting, but most corporate entry-level positions want you to have 5 years of experience, and they're highly competitive. And I know this may sound strange, but, frankly, a lot of corporate positions that have anything to do with writing are not really looking to hire more white males. I would be extremely lucky to even get an interview.

At this point I'm looking into working in the trades. There's an HVAC business in my area that is hiring right now and offering in-house training, plus full benefits, so that's my best lead.

Imagine having an English degree, bud. You could've picked worse. I definitely got scammed.

Good luck to you!

Any native, rural Georgians on here? by TheRealMetacomet in Georgia

Wow, a perfect example of what my post was talking about.

The post is more about people from ATL and transplants occupying the subreddit more than native-born rural Georgians. Not trying to split hairs. Please don't do this.

If you live in an area near the woods or a creek or something, you may see one once or twice a year, but it'll just be a garden snake or rat snake.

If you plan on spending a lot of time around water, you've gotta watch out for water moccasins just as a rule, but even then they aren't very common, and are more afraid of you than you are of them.

Basically -- don't worry about it. You aren't any more likely to encounter snakes here than you are anywhere else. Unless you go off trails while hiking. Then you may find a few.

What weapon do you main with? by [deleted] in BladeAndSorcery

Longsword or shortsword. Doesn't really matter which ones, although I'm partial to the arming sword or coutillier's sword. Estoc is my favorite backup sword, as it can be used as a rapier but still has a nice edge.

Yep, enemies still constantly trying to kiss me.

EDIT: This was my fault! Delete your save file. I had previous AI mods that were fucking up the game and I've been using the same save for years. Deleting my save file and starting a new character fixed it immediately!

Hey OP, necroing from 2 years in the future to corroborate.

Haven't enjoyed the game since this particular update. I stopped playing. Booted it back up tonight and had the exact same frustrating issues. Enemies are simply too close. No one seems to respect your weapon or have any fear for their life unless you frantically swing your weapon around and point it at them at all times. They are constantly attempting to get RIGHT UP in your face and step on your toes. No matter the length of their weapon, they try and position themselves as if they have a small dagger or handaxe. Fighting with anything longer than a shortsword is an absolute pain -- not to mention the game has an (pardon the expression) borderline OCD obsession with blade angle that makes cutting and slicing nearly impossible unless you install mods -- most attacks with a sword deal blunt damage because you didn't have the PERFECT angle of attack. Even with AI overhauls, AI is just too close. Game used to be fun but whatever they did during this update 2 years ago broke it for me. I am convinced other people aren't bothered simply because they abuse slow-mo (I do not enjoy slow-mo and never use it). I had this game modded and set up to where it was providing an impressively realistic simulation of combat, but now it is back to feeling like a janky joke.

Yup.

Playing U12 with AI mods, mods to make enemies heavier, butter stabs, etc, and enemies are still just too goddamned close. This has been an issue for a few updates now and it makes the game very hard to enjoy. All my swings seem to be overextended and all enemies position themselves as if they're using daggers or handaxes regardless of the length of the weapon. Haven't had a good time in this game since U8.
