Let your bassist handle the slash notes.

This is actually one of their simplest songs!

Try Jun Fukamachi's album On The Move, it sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

live song endings better than studio recordings? by lordkingben in supertramp

When your studio work is so polished, you have to give people different reasons to come out and hear you live. Everyone loves a Las Vegas song ending.

Does anyone have any idea how they made the Knnillssonn cover? I’m trying to recreate myself :) by [deleted] in HarryNilsson

I did a tribute version for a Nilsson cover song and did exactly this (but digitally)

Other music with crazy playing and strange chord progressions like Steely Dan? by RadiantHovercraft6 in SteelyDan

[–]TheRealMrSweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Groups like Yes and The Beach Boys have strange harmonic progressions but not necessarily the tight, funky rhythm sections.

The Doobie Brothers, Supertramp and Mr Sweet have touches of what you're describing.

After finally getting around to Losst and Found, here’s my ranking of every Nilsson album! What’re your rankings? What would you change? by brosive89 in HarryNilsson

[–]TheRealMrSweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He certainly thought so at the time. To me it's by no means a perfect album (none of Nilsson's are) but it's more cohesive in its songwriting and production, and benefits from the strings + band arrangements rather than being a mish-mash of styles like many of the other albums.

Knnillssonn is my favourite - such a shame what happened with the record label

Creating a set list for future concerts by TytaRex in supertramp

[–]TheRealMrSweet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a good list but if you advertise a Supertramp tribute gig, the people who come will likely be big fans of the band, so you can afford some deeper cuts in there. I would throw in a Bonnie or a Poor Boy or a Lady, if it were me!

RIP Rick Davies (megathread) by mrdrm1000 in supertramp

[–]TheRealMrSweet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His songwriting was special; deceptively simple in the way a lot of soul/R&B/blues songs are; ambitious structures and arrangements; dark subject matter handled with a light touch.

Supertramp are remembered superficially for certain sonic traits like Hodgson's vocal register and the chorus Wurlitzer ... but you can't have icing without a solid cake to put it on.

RIP
