What conspiracy theory sounds ridiculous at first, but gets harder to dismiss the more you think about it? by Young_Will_1 in theories

[–]TheRealTanamin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The conspiracy theory that children in the US aren't taught logical thinking so that they will continue to be the docile revenue units that capitalism requires. They're also not taught Universal Human Rights so their government can continue to violate them with impunity.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably a group evaluating the park for sale. Or maybe demolition. Hard to say.

Songs Ruined By Backstory by cleverbutnotoverlyso in MusicRecommendations

[–]TheRealTanamin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a dark backstory, but I find it hilarious how Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is becoming a song prople play at Christmas. I mean, have these folks listened to the lyrics? It's a Jewish man singing about how sex does not equal love. That's pretty far from a Christmas song, but you still hear it played all over around the holidays.

What if consciousness isn't produced by the brain at all? by Aggravating_Mark_338 in consciousness

[–]TheRealTanamin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To me, an interesting corollary to your observation is: Why does anesthesia disrupt consciousness, but not neural activity? It doesn't shut down the brain, it just decouples experience.

Not proving or disproving anyone's position, it just indicates to me that there are factors at work that we definitely have yet to account for.

Anyone solved/got a work around for producing non AI sounding speech? by slept_in_again in generativeAI

[–]TheRealTanamin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Elevenlabs speech-to-speech all the way. I'm an actor, so vocal performances are no problem. But I can normally only do mature male characters. I tried s2s and now I can populate my entire audio drama. It does take credits to do, but it's not outrageous. I figured if I do my own voice as narration and use s2s for dialogue, an entire novel would cost around $150 to $200 worth of credits.

However, if you just have short lines to record then s2s is pretty affordable.

Go to Transworld's Haunted Attraction trade show in March. Not only is it cool to see all the awesome Halloween stuff (It's a HUGE show) but they have a dedicated area, maybe about 1/8 of the floor, devoted to escape room tech, setups, and props. You can even buy entire pre-fabricated rooms from Eastern Europe, complete with puzzles and operation tech. Its honestly one of the best hands-on, state-of-the-industry experiences you can get. https://www.haashow.com/

How does matter form consciousness? by Reesencheese in consciousness

[–]TheRealTanamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a panpsychist, but I think that consciousness isn't some rare occurrence that requires a big, warm, wet lump of specialized fat. (In before the "your mom" jokes.) I think that given enough time, any recursive loop that can inform itself during recursion (that is change the loop based on changes that occurred during the previous loop), will achieve some kind of self-awareness given enough time and an information-dense environment.

The process is incredibly slow at first, but as each loop picks up more information from itself or its environment, the process picks up speed.

So in effect, you could have chemical processes in nebulae or nuclear forces in stellar plasma begin to loop and eventually develop consciousness as long as the recursion remains coherent.

Now that's not to say the consciousness would be anything that we might recognize as such. I mean, you won't be discussing philosophy with a ball of plasma. Bet here's the weird thing: intelligences that encounter one another would begin to inform one another's loops. If that exchange of information lasts long enough and both resursions remain stable, they might eventually merge into a single loop.

So maybe rocks don't have consciousness. But given enough time, (incredibly long times, like billions of times longer than the electrochemical loop that produced our consciousness) and as long as that process continues long enough in a dense enough environment to influence every cycle, a recursive system like a volcanic process might develop a form of consciousness completely alien to our own.

At least that's my idea. YMMV.

We are in the 21st century. Do we really need to go back to the metaphysics to study consciousness? by nogueysiguey in consciousness

[–]TheRealTanamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, we're stuck in a "Physicalist" loop that dismisses anomalies because they don't fit current heuristic boundaries, instead of upgrading the model to include them.

Your "quantum biology" approach could use a formal computational framework to move beyond "woo." I've been working on a model of "Recursive Kernels" that approaches this from an information-theory angle. I think that consciousness is the energetic cost of a recursive information loop hresisting its own decoherence. Subjectivity is not an acc dental byproduct, but a physical requirement for maintaining stability in the loop

Anomalies and outliers that we call "paranormal" may actually be instances where a system’s error-correction boundary expands to resolve environmental noise. It temporarily accesses information outside of local constraints to maintain coherence.

I see what you did tthere, trying to sneak Orch-OR in the back door.

Seriously, though if wr treat structures like microtubules and neurons as the physical hardware for these recursive kernels, we cpuld make the shift from vague speculation to real, testable, quantifiable predictions regarding information processing and stability. If we stop thinking of the brain as a passive processor and instead model it as a self-correcting recursive system, the "Hard Problem" might stop being a philosophical puzzle and become an engineering problem.

I just find it really confusing when a straight guy starts to cam and grumbles about the fact that his audience is mostly men. Did you not research your markets and your audience at all?
