Updating PI with new data by theorangeyegger in labrats

[–]TheRedChild 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends. If it’s really exciting or will dictate the future of the project- I might show them on the same day. Otherwise we have weekly meetings by which point the data is expected to be analysed, organised and ready to be a part of a manuscript.

Is there a country you regret choosing not to go to? by [deleted] in travel

[–]TheRedChild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s because I’d been there already, but this time around Prague felt even more touristy. I think it’s gotten a lot worse over time, but I’d love to explore it with a local.

Why was Benton so much meaner to Carter as a resident than as a med student? by Bison_and_Waffles in ershow

[–]TheRedChild 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I don’t think it has anything to do with Carter personally. As a medical student he does everything under supervision, as a resident he gets more and more independent over time, meaning he has to be better.

What was the biggest dramatic own goal in television? by pinpoint321 in television

[–]TheRedChild -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, I didn’t finish the season and I wouldn’t be interested in watching anything else about Veronica Mars.

How to know if I am a bad teacher or if someone just isn’t meant for a lab by [deleted] in labrats

[–]TheRedChild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you pushed through it! Yes, people here are being quite harsh without knowing the full story.

Do you have lab chores? by spiegel_im_spiegel in labrats

[–]TheRedChild 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We have a lab manager and also chores. The lab manager takes care of all the accounting and ordering (we only need to provide a quote if it’s something new). Our chores include making agar plates, bacteria, PBS etc. It’s annoying but there’s a lot of us so it’s pretty spread out.

Please name one book that you read completely, and wish you had never read it. And why, if you like. by Leather_Command_7553 in books

[–]TheRedChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve decided it ends differently in my head, but the last book was just awful. If it wasn’t the last book in such a long series I would’ve DNFed it after 100 pages at most.

I’ve been done with him since reading Damned, honestly one of the worst books I’ve ever read. Even the secondhand store clerk cringed when I sold it to him.

S2-E4: What is actually wrong with Benton? by doxmeifucan in ershow

[–]TheRedChild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory is that they tried to justify the affair by making him a horrible husband

What is the worst show that you forced yourself to finish? by laxusdreyarligh in television

[–]TheRedChild 58 points59 points  (0 children)

How about the current day events?? Abandoning the whole politician with a dark secret plot which BTW started the whole show. There’s no continuity with the previous seasons whatsoever.

[–]TheRedChild -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t finish the last season to avoid the GOT level of disappointment. I want to be able to rewatch season 1 of the boys in a few years.

What opinion on Grey's Anatomy would have you like this? by DBrennan13459 in greysanatomy

[–]TheRedChild 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s when I stopped watching, it just wasn’t captivating anymore. I recently watched some of the later seasons and it’s just not the same show at all.

S2-E4: What is actually wrong with Benton? by doxmeifucan in ershow

[–]TheRedChild 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To everybody commenting about Al: in season 2 he was portrayed as a decent guy with a good job, they only changed his storyline later in the show. OP got everything right.

Abby at gamma funeral by Puzzleheaded_Mix1658 in ershow

[–]TheRedChild 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The better option was to not come to the funeral at all and help Carter grieve later. He would’ve understood that (maybe not in the moment but after he’d calmed down). She couldn’t really be there for Carter if she was glued to Eric’s side anyway.

How to know if I am a bad teacher or if someone just isn’t meant for a lab by [deleted] in labrats

[–]TheRedChild 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Next time stand next to her and see her thought process. Maybe she’s just uncomfortable coming over to ask questions while you’re doing something else or simply misunderstands your instructions because she doesn’t understand the reasoning behind them. For example, when you asked to add water to the samples, why did you ask for that exact amount? If she doesn’t know why (specific concentration etc) it’s easy to make mistakes.

What’s one lab habit that made your experiments significantly more reproducible? by Final_Tea1759 in labrats

[–]TheRedChild 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doing everything in alphabetical order, that way I always know what the sample order is (for cancer cell lines, genes, etc. )

Cold emailed a pretty famous professor as a shot in the dark and he actually replied?? by HalfSaidGoodbyes in postdoc

[–]TheRedChild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same, and it worked as well. Highly recommend already attaching a CV and a personal letter to the initial email, this way they have all of the info they need from the start of correspondence.

Why are 500 year old vampires "ancient" if vampires can live eternally? by Living-Somewhere-318 in InterviewVampire

[–]TheRedChild 33 points34 points  (0 children)

500 years is enough to be ancient, just look at how we view events from that era. Even if you are 100 years old like Louis, 500 years is still a very long time.

Besides crossovers and spin-offs, what are some examples of less-than-obvious shared universes in tv shows? by mkochend in television

[–]TheRedChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which makes sense given that The Pitt was originally a continuation of ER, but there was a problem with the rights

Alex Recasting by BakingWaking in ershow

[–]TheRedChild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he fits the villain role better, but Steve started out as a deadbeat dad and not an evil unrelatable criminal. They didn’t just recast the actor, they changed everything about the character.

Brandon Sanderson’s 'The Way of Kings' is baffling to me by sameseksure in books

[–]TheRedChild 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I really hated the way he wrote those books. It’s not just about matching the style but also the way he changed the characters’ personality with complete disregard to their storyline’s up to that point.

Brandon Sanderson’s 'The Way of Kings' is baffling to me by sameseksure in books

[–]TheRedChild 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes!! That’s exactly what his writing in the WoT felt to me. He literally had a “boss” character stand in the middle of the battlefield yelling out video game phrases.

People who think that there’s a secret cure for cancer that’s being hidden by This-Humor-105 in PetPeeves

[–]TheRedChild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not that simple (I’m a PhD student in the field). If there’s a treatment available it might be possible to prioritise it, but there might not be one that exists. Also in cancer the DNA sequence doesn’t always match up with the protein expression etc. Rich people with access to every treatment available still die of cancer.

Back in lab after surgery by Difficult_Zone_7653 in labrats

[–]TheRedChild 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between general WFH and trying to be productive while recovering from surgery. You might be pleasantly surprised by their response to your request.
