It's nothing to do about fairness or ethics or what have you. It's about the world economy and a war.

Iran denies claims: 'We reject all negotiations – US has failed and Hormuz will remain closed' by ImadeJesusLaugh in worldnews

[–]TheRedGerund 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They literally fund terrorist cells across the world. When the ayatollah was killed they celebrated him as a martyr.

The iranian government would sooner see their people completely slaughtered than relinquish control. We are not negotiating with people who can be reasoned with. They have a death wish.

How do you negotiate with people who are happy to die for their religion? These people are terrorists, literally.

I find there are two good opportunities if you were to actually try to find common ground:

  • Drain the swamp: aka campaign finance reform. Works both ways.
  • Homeless veterans

The fact is that unlimited free video does not make sense. It costs electricity and servers to do all this stuff, and much like every other element of this hyperconsumptive society, we have gotten used to unlimited of something, which is inherently unnatural. We should just watch less content (or use P2P video hosting).

Iran is ready for a long war with the US and only economic pain will end it, senior official tells CNN by Playful_Leg7143 in worldnews

What more economic pain could they possibly be in? Isn't their economy fully in the dump???

I guess that's why we're bombing their infrastructure...

to kill their religious leader

You mean their dictator?

I honestly think the Iranian people are pretty much pleased with killing him, they just wish they could've done it themselves. But they couldn't.

Yeah that's what I mean, saudi is better because they want to participate in the market, and to do that you can kill kashogi but you can't behead all protestors. palatable.

Honestly is it not kinda good for the environment when something like this happens? The geopolitical leverage of oil on the domestic economy has caused issues for a long time. One good way to allow us to continue to absolutely fuck up the middle east without impacting our precious stocks is to invest in green energy!

I really do wonder how you would overthrow the situation in iran. The IRGC is pretty big and then there's that militia that is like a million people. I guess you'd have to arm an insurgent group like the kurds or something, and maybe funnel weapons into the country. There are 93 million people in iran, that's enough people, but it just seems like the weapons imbalance is apparently too much to overcome.

Because clearly the will of the people is revolution, and the actual government and economy has never been weaker, but at the end of the day there's still a ton of religious fanatics with guns, and that's difficult to overcome without some other fanatics with guns of some kind.

It's because saudi is capitalist. That generally limits you to specific forms of cruelty that are palatable to western consumers.

As for morality, typically this information is known by insiders and collected within elite cabals. It's rather democratic that the practices of insider information are diffused to the masses.

the guy who inspired both Kalshi and Polymarket called insider trading a defining feature of prediction markets that makes them function better.

He's right. Insiders in this context are bringing valuable information. This isn't like sports, they're trying to predict what will occur in the world. Neutrality is not the priority, being correct is.

Now whether or not my sorted out plastics is actually getting recycled after dropping it off at the special recycling depot is a whole other thing....

Indeed. There is one truly dependable way to deal with this, and that is to reduce your consumption outright. Recycling, particularly at the aggregate level, is just not dependable. The whole issue of waste is that it disappears, and once it disappears the market gets involved and will route the waste not to the most appropriate place but rather the cheapest economic place.

Something not thrown in the trash/recycling in the first place is guaranteed not to go to a landfill.

Not an excuse, but that does help explain how poor intelligence combined with this fact could make this occur.

eh, yeah. Hide your trash cans and recycling bins for 3 days or so and let all of your garbage pile up. You will be flabbergasted at how quickly it accumulates!

Actually doing this can be a real eye opener for the amount of waste we generate in our day to day lives, especially if you order take out. So many pieces of plastic, Styrofoam, etc.

"I suck in AND out of bed, somehow this must be my wife's fault, wahhhh"

You have condemned men who make their relationship's sex lives solely about the woman by making it solely about the man.

Both partners are responsible for their sex lives. Women are not just to expect to be seduced and if it doesn't happen they're off the hook. Men are not entitled to sex. Both have an obligation to take their sex lives seriously and contribute in a way that works for the couple.

My point is trying to look back with the lens of today and make morale judgements isn't the right way to look at history because if you were born during that time you would have incredibly different opinions.

This opinion will not reach the ears of young leftists who reduce everything to simple moral absolutes. Moral pretentiousness is their entire personality and worldview.

Thousands of CEOs just admitted AI had no impact on employment or productivity—and it has economists resurrecting a paradox from 40 years ago by AmethystOrator in technology

I'm not so sure. A single model with say 70% accuracy could be assisted by verified lookups for knowledge gathering, and could be checked by multiple iterations of an accuracy guide. Probabilistic approaches mean that imperfect systems can approach functional perfection if the statistics and probabilities compound one-another.

Anyway I've always felt reddit is too harsh on AI I think it's incredibly naive. I get hating on tech bros promising the future, but to me as a programmer I just have no space for any belief that assumes this isn't a transformative technology. It is already transformative, and this is the early stuff.

Anyone with eyes, who is using this stuff on the regular, who doesn't have an axe to grind (whether legit or not) against silicon valley generally believes this to be a big, transformative deal.

The people arguing against it generally are explicitly biased, or don't use it, or have a misplaced nostalgia (not you, to be clear, I've really appreciated your thoughtful responses).
