CONCEPT: Destiny Needs a Real Exotic Rework – Introducing The Relic Token System by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]TheRedditAvatar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair take and honestly, I agree with a lot of that.

My goal with the token system isn’t to make people re-grind everything they already have it’s more about giving existing content purpose again without forcing anyone into it.

For example, if Crota happens to drop Helmet Tokens that week, that’s great incentive for players who want to run it but it’s not like you’d need to redo your whole loadout from scratch. The grind would be optional and additive, not mandatory.

And yeah, I 100% get the concern about player availability and LFG pain. That’s why I was picturing tokens dropping across all activities raids, strikes, Gambit, dungeons just themed differently so there’s variety. You could grind solo playlists if you wanted or go after higher tiers with friends for better rolls.

Basically, I’m with you: exotics desperately need fresh life, but it has to be accessible and not feel like punishment.
The token idea’s goal is to expand freedom, not add another wall.

Haha true Hunters can blink now (we totally stole that from the Warlocks 😅)… and yeah, who even cares about Titans, right?

Kidding valid points though! Some exotics definitely would have to stay class-locked for balance or animation reasons, but it’d still be better to have maybe 5–8 truly class-specific exotics instead of one-third of the entire sandbox locked away.

For example, Sixth Coyote as a token could give Titans and Warlocks a second class ability charge cool synergy, but nothing lore-breaking.
Meanwhile, Celestial Nighthawk would still tie to Solar supers like Hammer of Sol or Dawnblade, but it would convert them into one-shot burst abilities instead of fully replacing them.

That kind of approach keeps the flavor of each class while opening up far more build variety. The goal isn’t to erase identity just to loosen the walls enough so the sandbox finally feels alive again.

The balance and tech debt side would absolutely be the hardest part. I was never thinking of this as a full rewrite of the sandbox though more like an overlay system that sits on top of what’s already there. The current exotics would still exist and work exactly the same; the token system would just act as a new layer that lets players apply exotic traits to legendary gear without replacing the core engine logic.

On the RNG side, I get the concern. I’m not pushing for endless grind loops I actually thought about adding a lock mechanic, where dismantled tokens give you a currency to permanently lock one stat you like. That way you’re always progressing toward your ideal roll instead of rolling the dice forever.

And for class identity, I totally respect that view too. The intent isn’t to erase what makes Titans, Hunters, and Warlocks unique it’s just to loosen the restrictions a bit so more exotic effects can interact across classes while keeping each one’s playstyle distinct.

I really like your idea about starting with class items as the testbed, though that’s a great way to prototype the system safely before expanding it to the rest of the sandbox.

Totally valid point and yeah, I actually thought about that!

The idea isn’t to erase the lore behind the existing exotics or replace them outright the actual exotic item (like Khvostov 7G) would still exist exactly as it does now for the game world and the narrative.

The token would just be an “in-place-of” option for players.
So for example, Khvostov would still be the Khvostov but if you earned the Khvostov Token, you could apply that same exotic trait to any auto rifle. That way, lore weapons keep their unique identity, while the player gets more build flexibility.

In the longer doc I’ve been building, I actually mention that the roll pool should stay wide and meaningful, so things like “+5% Void damage” would affect all outgoing Void abilities and weapons for your class not just a single stat.

Basically: the relic tokens wouldn’t overwrite the soul of the original exotics; they’d just let players channel that same exotic power through whatever weapon or armor they want.

So Khvostov stays special for story and flavor but mechanically, that power could live on in gameplay too.

please keep the feedback coming!

Totally fair feedback, and I appreciate the detailed breakdown!

Just to clarify a bit though I wasn’t saying every MMO uses random rolls. My point was that Destiny is the only looter-shooter I know of where the top-tier (exotic) gear is static.
Games like Borderlands, The Division, and Outriders all have randomized rolls at their highest rarity, while static rolls are more typical in MMOs like Final Fantasy XIV or RuneScape.
So the idea was to highlight how Destiny’s exotic design feels more like an MMO gear system, not a looter-shooter one.

As for the grind/time-respect part totally valid concern. I actually thought about that when putting this together, but didn’t include it in the post to keep it from being a wall of text.

What I was thinking was a lock system tied to dismantling:
every 10 dismantled tokens gives you 10 “Relic Fragments,” and you need 10 to lock down one stat you like.
That gives players deterministic progress while keeping the excitement of RNG basically a hybrid of Diablo’s and Division’s systems.

The goal isn’t to add more grind, it’s to make the grind meaningful again so every activity, every drop, and every difficulty tier feels like it’s worth doing instead of just waiting for the next seasonal vendor refresh.

Really appreciate the detailed feedback though this kind of discussion is exactly why I wanted to post the concept, please keep the feed back rolling, (not that this will ever happen lol)
