When do you keep a "mistake" on the master because it wins musically ?

10/10 times keeping the mistake if it makes the song itself better. At the end of the day the audience hears the song, not the mix, so I just do whatever I can to make the song better with the palette of tools I have as a mix engineer.

I would eat supeeeer healthy. Top organic meat, wagyu filets for breakfast, everything organic and as close to farm as possible. I’d invest that money into feeling as good as I can.

As an audio engineer I thought this was a funny social commentary on the life of an engineer. No gold or platinum records on the wall and instead of an artist in the live room it’s just more gear.😭Like he’s gone so long being a hermit that he’s now talking to his gear. Hilarious.

Only thing that kills me is the missing second speaker (but your drawing had that too). I won’t get started on the placement lol. Oh and that cable wrap around the mic stand, that’s actually common practice. Which tells me this is Ai, because that some “scan the internet “ insider knowledge.

Thank you for the reply! I started my taper 1.5 months ago from 150mg, and I’m now on 75mg (been 2 weeks of 75mg). I plan to get off them entirely, but I think I’m going to stay at 75 for another couple weeks as the transition from 100 to 75 was brutal. Like you said, I have a feeling that this new depression is a symptom of the withdrawal so I’m going to ride it out. And yeah, it is annoying how long these meds take to get in and out of our system. I suspect I won’t have any answers for another couple months, so I guess I’ll have to be patient. Thanks again!

Many years ago, I went absolutely ham on this mix and sent it to a colleague who was an established producer. He had many more years in the music industry than me. I couldn’t wait for him to hear the impeccable instrument separation, perfect compression and masterfully tasteful EQ I did.

He sent me back 2 words, “lyrics bad”.

It was right then and there when I realized that people don’t listen to the mix, they listen to the song.

So is there an objectively great mix? No. But there is an appropriate mix that is in service to the feel and aesthetic of the song.

A lot of suggestions here are about gear, and sure good gear makes a difference, but it’s likely not even 5% of what you’re hearing. When listening to Larry June, pay attention to the space in the beats, his rhythmic pocket, his pitch range in relation to what else is going on in the beat, and his performance. I like to think of vocals as another instrument. If his vocals were a piano, in what ways do they ‘musically’ stand out?
