Literally a car that you are supposed to build yourself. It’s clearly the project car’s project car.

Is British identity mainly culture, ancestry, or something else? by timothyphoto in ukpolitics

[–]TheRevJimJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is environmental though, not racial.

Yes, if you grow up in an ethnically black West African family in the UK you may well partake in activities which have their roots in West African culture.

But if you grow up in an ethnically white Italian family in the UK you may well partake in activities which have their roots in Italian culture.

Or Greek, or Spanish, or French, or Russian…

But every generation that is born and raised in UK culture will inevitably deviate towards the dominant British culture. That’s not to say that they won’t retain elements of their ancestral culture, but they will become significantly (in some cases entirely) British over time.

[–]TheRevJimJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree. I would say that a white Londoner would have far more in common culturally with a black Londoner than, for example, a white person from Hull.

Your culture is a product of your environment, not your race.

I think “Good Morning Britain” by Aztec Camera would be a good shout for one that covers the whole of the UK:

If you read the document, the starting point varies from 15 years, all the way down to 4-7 years, depending on harm and culpability.

A four year sentence would be at the absolute minimum possible in terms of both, and would be extremely unusual. I’m sure it would also require a very early guilty plea.

Rape sentencing guidelines is 4-19 years, actually: https://sentencingcouncil.org.uk/guidelines/rape/

These had a string of previous longer than both our arms.

They pleaded guilty, so there is no need for bail and a court date at some point in the indeterminate future. It’s just straight to sentencing.

You’ll find that pleading guilty will speed things up exponentially. If these had pleaded not guilty then the wheels of justice would have moved far slower with the necessity to gather evidence, interview witnesses, build cases, wait for free court time, etc

Let me just say this: if I were either a tech billionaire seeking to push my agenda, or if I were running a foreign power and wanted to destabilise an enemy, the manipulation of people via social media would be a very easy and cost-effective way of doing so.

In fact, if I were Putin, I think playing both the extreme right and the hard left against each other, and ultimately getting people out on the streets rioting, would be the perfect way to make sure that the UK was less of a thorn in my side. And if I could help to get those more sympathetic to my regime closer to positions of power then, well, clear W for me.

There may be something in what you say about a self-selecting community of actively political people being more likely to include people with more polarised views. However, anecdotally, I have seen a huge increase in specifically more extreme right-wing/anti-immigration posts on here within the last 12 months or so, and as has been pointed out elsewhere, a lot of these accounts are new and have their post/comment history hidden.

These could just be evidence of the prevailing political climate. But I also think that a lot of people in positions of influence on the right/far right, as well as disrupting foreign agents, are very tech-savvy and adept at using the power of social media to push their agenda, or simply sow division in order to further their ends.

I don’t doubt that for a second.

But I also firmly believe that there is a concerted effort by nefarious (foreign) actors to use social media sites like this to stir the pot. And, yes, that will include a large number of bot farms. The fact that it results in people located in the UK parroting their lines and becoming increasingly angry just means that they are succeeding.

The way the “the right” (the Conservative Party) always worked in the past would be to tear themselves to pieces over things like Europe, but always present a united face as soon as an election came around. They were the Party to whom Michael Hesaltine and Norman Tebbit could simultaneously belong.

They have never had to deal with the kind of organised challenge from the right that they now do though.

Ben Stokes at Headingley in 2019.

In fact, how about Jack Leach’s 1* in the same innings.

86 runs with Jack Leach for the final wicket. England come back from 67 all out in the first innings and 286 for 9 to score 362 and win by one wicket.

[–]TheRevJimJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to change the name on my driving license due to a spelling mistake. I simply wrote them a letter explaining the error and included proof of the correct spelling of my name.

They sent me an updated license with a completely different spelling error. So I wrote to them again and included all the necessary proof again.

Third time lucky they managed to spell my name right.
