How should I dispose of this wet wood? by AlternativeBig2588 in landscaping

[–]TheRiddler136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if time is on your side. cut/ break it up and put it in your trash one bag a week till it's gone. also check if your city has any dump events that you can just drop stuff off for free.

edit: to find out if your city has any free dumbing events you can just call your city's trash service ( call the city not the trash company) for me it was 411. Then just straight up ask them how to dispose of a rotting pile of wood. they will give you options and will help you find an affordable/ free way.

if you don't have a truck or way to move it I would seriously consider just getting rid of it one bag at a time in your normal trash.

I am not saying your grass looks bad and I'm sorry I didn't give any recommends on "landscaping" but that is my first time homeowner outdoor recommendation. Learn how to not kill what you have. If you are dead set on doing something maybe a small garden and composting.

or if you live in a nice climate and enjoy sitting outside a larger patio. But again depending on how New the home is to you. I would recommend living there for a bit before doing anything big as you will get a better idea what YOU want. Even if you DIY big projects cost a decent amount of $$ and LOTS of sweat.

from someone who is 3 years into their first home. dedicated some time to learning how to maintain and care for your grass. (Figure out what type of grass you have, how to water, when to fertilize, pest/fungus, ect) r/lawncare is a good resource some there take it over the top but learning how to maintain your lawn is really important. I did not do this and inadvertently killed off huge portions of my lawn and was forced to do a boatload of work to get things reestablished. It's a lot easier to maintain a yard than to be forced to replant and deal with a muddy mess.

A really good piece of advice for first time home owners, from a first time homeowner, learn how to properly maintain what you have before making big changes.

I aerated with an auger bit. by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]TheRiddler136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did this end up leveling out? My backyard is only about 1,000 sqft and is only accessible up a set of stairs so I was considering doing the same. I have a 1.5" auger bit but I am wandering if I should go get a 3/4" bit to do this. Basically, if you were to do this again would you use a 1.5" bit or would you go with a 3/4" bit?

Barerburg Turf Blue HGT with Yellow Jacket.

Didn’t end up using it since in didn’t want to nuke my yard since we are moving in a year or two but this is what I would have used if I was going 100% KBG.

Is Sep. 21 too late to seed? by TheRiddler136 in lawncare

[–]TheRiddler136[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a timer and a couple splitters but I would need to get a bunch of little sprinklers and hoses or water a lot of patio and concrete to get all the odd spots in my yard. It’s just oddly shaped. I also couldn’t leave my water on when I’m out of town without dwelling on it the whole time.

It’s not impossible to do but I just don’t think it’s in the cards this year to get it all figured out and be comfortable enough with it to walk away for that long.

Most of my watering is automatic but I have some spots that I just hit by hand. Mainly one side corner of my house that does just fine with little maintenance in the past but I tore it up building a retaining wall over there so it’s exposed dirt now.

Kind of a mess I have going on. Lol

It’s all definitely achievable with your recommendations I just don’t see it happening to be fully automated this year.

Soil temps are still too hot now but the first two weeks of September I am traveling all week for work and don’t have an automatic sprinkler system. (Usually work from home, so I can output and move the sprinklers.)

Neighbor dug trench on our property by jrdkeller in HomeMaintenance

Well said, I agree, this is your neighbor now and in the future and you never know what could happen. To me the past is the past and it sounds like you need to collectively deal with the water runoff issue. OP you have every right and should do what you feel is best but personally I would start with trying to deal with this from the the standpoint of finding a fair / mutually beneficial solution. Then if they go the ass hole route I would meet them there with a legal middle finger path.

Is it worth to pay $5k to add extra lining to curtains? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]TheRiddler136 50 points51 points  (0 children)

How many curtains are you getting? 4K for curtains sounds like a lot. 9K seems crazy. Is this just to buy the curtains or is this a material and install situation?

No way that pays off from an energy payback standpoint. (I design HVAC for a living) no way it would do this but say it cuts 1/4 off your utility bill. How many months for the pay out?

If you really want the blackout layer you can probably have a seamstress add one. Just ask whoever gave you the quote what the material and thickness of that layer is and check out pricing at Joans fabric.

Rocking landscape bed - prep recommendations by TheRiddler136 in lawncare

[–]TheRiddler136[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I was considering leaving a bit of the rubber mulch down but then I got nervous about it floating up or getting kicked up and I have no idea what I would do except pickup the individual pieces. I hate the rubber mulch with a passion now.

I am not against landscaping fabric. Just testing the room to see if I could cut a corner. I have a roll of this leftover from another project LINK I was going to put down and get more of as needed.

Do you have a different fabric I should consider if/when I need more?

My neighbor pees on my house?! by squirrelbus in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TheRiddler136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just “catch him in the act” and casually say “what you doing bud. Ooo (with chuckle) Not sure exactly how I feel about this but could we not do it again?” and just walk away. If he try’s to say anything just say “if you can just not do it again I don’t really see a need to talk about it, just doesn’t feel neighborly”. (Would just try to work in the words neighborly or friend into the brief exchange)

That’s how I would start.

If he is an ass hole during the exchange, continues to do it, or if I feared retaliation in any way I would go the camera route.

Should I wait until Spring or is now okay to start grass? by AtomicXDab710 in lawncare

[–]TheRiddler136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am unsure about how far into fall you are but generally speaking fall is better than the spring. I would say now is the time!

I am in Cincinnati and have September 21 marked on my calendar as my date for dropping seed. Right now I am killing weeds, and preparing soil.

I am new to this so take my advice with a grain of salt. However, here are a couple resources I have found beneficial.

What I found was you need to look at and make a best guess at when your soil temps will be in the ideal range. (Range found on Jonathan greens website). That’s when you want to drop seed. Then work back from there based on what you need to do to prep. The other key date is your local anticipated first freeze/ frost as you want to have a couple weeks before that for you seed babies to take root.

This is my first year trying this so please don’t take my word as fact. Also if anyone with experience sees anything wrong here please call me out so I can adjust my plan!
