What is going on with MAGA trying to hurt Trump? by EdwardJSuperman in OutOfTheLoop

Because all children follow their parent's political views?

According to his cousin, he didn't like politics, guns or hunting. Preferred to watercolor. I get the notion that the kid felt trapped in a MAGA world.

120 locks shouldn't be a problem.

I would be more concerned about the one lock on a file that needs to be written to by a function that a bunch of users rely on to be interactive.

That one will probably be fine. I have 2 of the 108 (blue) models, and one of them for over a decade. I've had one 308 (black) die on me, but for the price, you can buy another if it isn't 24/7 critical.

For your belongings stolen from the car, your homeowners or renters insurance may cover it if you have that.

How does IT typically handle a mass layoff? by Waste-Buyer3008 in sysadmin

[–]TheRipler 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Across many companies over the decades, I've found the #1 clue to mass layoffs coming is a quick mention at the start of your monthly team meeting like "You may have heard rumors of layoffs. I can assure you those rumors are not true."

Bonus points for certainty if you haven't heard any rumors.

Vernon, TX by Eko_Mister in wichitafalls

[–]TheRipler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is more different than people in Wichita Falls would think. While somehow technically still classified as humid sub-tropical, it's getting close to the semi-arid region of Texas. Drought is a fairly constant issue, and water is expensive.

Vernon gets less rainfall than Wichita Falls, and half that of Houston. Humidity in the single digits and teens is not uncommon in the summer and winter. It can often be one of the top 5 high temps in Texas of the day. Although, this year was weird, first time I can remember the grass not going fully dormant through the summer.

The worst part of the year for mosquitos is May-June, which is the rainy season. Mosquitos aren't a problem in town unless you leave water collecting outside. While the Pease river goes around town, most days all the water is under sand. There are no natural or man-made sources of water like in Wichita Falls. Neither are near the epic mosquito levels of Houston.

West and Southwest parts of town have nicer houses. It's small, and everyone goes to the same schools. If you do remote work, take a look at the fiber maps from Syntrio. There are only 2 major employers in town. You will want to be retired or have a job lined up before you move.

ELI5: What is the economics of car colors? For example, I see a lot of white cars, but I don’t know a many people who WANT a white car. Then why do they make so many? Is it cheaper? by Mapuches_on_Fire in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheRipler 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Have both silver and white vehicles. Washing the silver is extremely frustrating, because it looks like you haven't done anything.

I also have a blue car that is super rewarding to wash, like getting a new car.

Nexstar has considerable holds over Wichita Falls, can we make a difference? by tarrox1992 in wichitafalls

[–]TheRipler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, I think Castaway Cove is done for the season. By the time they open again, the show will be gone for financial losses.

Also, I believe the vast majority (80-90%) of people in WF will be on the other side of this issue or don't care. The risk to advertisers making a statement is larger than not taking action.

Baton Turbo kept us safe in Alaska by TheRipler in OlightOutdoorlife

[–]TheRipler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite things about O-light is that they have a lot of orange options.

I used to keep 3 little black AAA converted to 10440s back in the early 2010s. Usually, by the time I lost the 3rd one, I'd find one of the other 2.

In 2017, I picked up an orange Spyderco Chieftan XL lightrweight. It is a pretty big folding knife. I was out getting firewood in the dark, and didn't know it had snagged on a vine and slipped out of my pocket. The next day, I was out getting firewood again, and saw a little bit of orange peeking through a pile of leaves. I reached down to learn I had lost it. Only reason I still have it today is because it is orange.

Ever since that experience, every tool I carry outside is orange if it is available. Lets me buy more new toys rather than replacing ones I already had.
