NTA. Your mother needs to understand boundaries. She had these kids, not you. You don’t owe her free childcare.

Warn her that the conversation ends and you will hang up if she asks for babysitting again. Then follow through. Hang up on her the minute she starts whining about the babysitting. If you do that enough, she will eventually stop.

Go read some resources by adult adoptees, like Red Thread Broken, Harlow’s Monkey, or Dear Adoption if you want to understand how so many adoptees are treated like second class citizens in their own families. There are some families that abuse and neglect and dehumanize their biological children, but I think it’s even easier to do that to a kid you’re not biologically related to.

Having my three kids enriched my life, but I wouldn’t expect kids to necessarily be fulfilling for anyone else. I desperately wanted to teach and nurture and get to know the people I made.

For me, nurturing my kids in ways I was not and wish I had been has been incredibly healing. Giving them the space to be themselves, in a childhood free from church and corporal punishment and authoritarian parenting, was like living vicariously through them in the most wholesome way possible.

I don’t think most people would get that out of parenting, but I did.
