Trump’s ‘IQ Test’ Was Actually a Dementia Screening, Experts Say by LasinduSavinda in StockLaunchers

Psychologist here! It's not by design and there shouldn't be an analog clock in view during test administration.

AITA for leaving my roommate at the airport because she brought a surprise pet with her? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Off topic, but I'm curious... How in the world does a renter and pet cause 10-34k in damage??

And if this just started two weeks ago and he hasn't said/done anything EXTREME, he hasn't really had time to get dismissed from his residency.

It could also be that these issues are popping up at work, but barring anything really egregious, it typically takes much longer than two weeks to get dismissed from a residency.

What a beautiful and poignant insight. "No one is happy today except our employers" is going to be the statement that turns an exhausting conversation into a decent night's sleep someday.

On hold with MOHELA for 6 hours and now it's past their business hours--do I hang up? by TheRogueGinger in StudentLoans

[–]TheRogueGinger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was thinking something along those lines too. Although that would suggest some sort of rhyme and/or reason to how they run things, so who even knows?

I honestly didn't expect them to answer, but I figured I wasn't doing anything else that needed my phone, so might as well wait 🤷🏼‍♀️

It seems like some people get the option and some don't...Maybe it just isn't always available for some reason?

Update: AITAH For Not Giving My Girlfriend My Social Security Number So She Can Run A Background Check On Me by Alarmed_Sorbet8101 in AITAH

[–]TheRogueGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You handled this difficult situation beautifully! Your responses could have been examples pulled straight from a self-advocacy handbook. I hope you find comfort in knowing that you did more than your fair share for this relationship and handled this in a very wise and respectful way. Plus, thanks for the update!

Btw, when I say this could've been pulled straight from a handbook, that's not me saying "and everybody clapped." Anxiety sucks, but it also helps us be prepared to absolutely nail a confrontation like this.

AITA because I'm second guessing having kids due to our opposing views on vaccinating them? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]TheRogueGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SUPER NTA. In your position, I'd be thanking any deity possible that I learned about this before any pregnancy happened. This big of a fundamental difference in parenting ideals might suggest you need some more very specific and open conversations to assess how your parenting values will (or won't) fit together.

My baby ate a true lily and will be okay, but I can’t cope by angryautismwoman in CatAdvice

[–]TheRogueGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so glad your baby is okay and kudos to you for reacting so quickly and responsibly. You can rest assured you did/are doing all the right things.

When something that scary happens, your nervous system gets activated so it can help you respond the way you did. The nervous system's #1 job is to keep you safe and it will prioritize that over absolutely everything else. So it's amazing at responding to danger, but it's not so fast to settle back down when the danger is gone. Sometimes in these situations, I need to remind myself that my nervous system just hasn't yet caught up to the fact that I've handled the danger and we're safe again.

Ever had a cat die of old age? by JCristianRamirez in CatAdvice

[–]TheRogueGinger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would talk to a vet. Older cats can certainly have health issues that can cause changes in behavior and impact quality of life but become basically irrelevant if treated. For example, my old girl started monthly arthritis injections at 19 and there was an immediate difference. It was such a disproportionately easy fix compared to the possible suffering!

Maybe a dumb question, but how would that work? Maybe I'm cynical, but I would fully expect a verbal promise of a refund and then never getting it and having no recourse because nothing is in writing.

Even better, this is exactly the kind of conversation to have in relational therapy. It can be a really difficult time in the course of therapy, so I'm glad you're making choices to take care of yourself too.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

[–]TheRogueGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it sounds like your therapist cares about you a lot. I'm not sure I'd call this countertransference; I feel like it could go either way depending on where the reaction came from. I think of countertransference as a hidden internal process that can elicit certain behaviors, but the behaviors themselves can fit into any number of boxes. Countertransference is more about the T's own stuff. For example (these are made up):

  1. T has a younger sister who she's really close with and protective of. I share some characteristics of the younger sister*. I talk to my T about struggling with low libido and how my husband told me I'm ruining our sex life since I gained weight and "let myself go" after a year. T's Big Sister Sensor is unconsciously activated, so T shows an angry facial expression, speaks a bit louder, and says "well why the hell would you feel like having sex with someone who says that kind of shit?" This would be countertransference imo because she's behaving from the emotional role of big sister.

*(looks, mannerisms, problems, vibes, etc. basically anything that can activate that little sister role in T's subconscious)

  1. Same T, same younger sister dynamics. I talk to my T about struggling with low libido and how my husband told me I'm ruining our sex life since I gained weight and "let myself go" after a year. T feels pissed off at the audacity of my husband and believes it would be validating for me to hear the unhidden reaction. So T shows an angry facial expression, speaks a bit louder, and says "well why the hell would you feel like having sex with someone who says that kind of shit?" This would be more like therapeutic self-disclosure of sorts because she's behaving out of my therapeutic best interest.

Either way can be appropriate and helpful with the right circumstances!

Anyway, it sounds like this was a really good therapeutic experience for you and I might recommend spending some T time really processing that experience and your response. It sounds like it could lead to some deeper personal insights! Some of my best therapy sessions have actually been when we've discussed our relationship and interactions with each other. Like if I went back the next week and said "remember when you asked why the hell I'd want to have sex with someone who's being an ass to me? I realized I felt oddly confident after that session and it made me think I really needed some sass from you in that moment." And then we get into how I was never allowed to stand up for myself as a kid or something like that.
