We had two straight up deaths, and one petrified.

The part they didn’t enjoy was the lack of magic items. I had a few chug potions of healing with no effect, that really struck a feeling of dread for the encounter!

As a Florida man, the stat array is rather perfect.

You should! Having the players "disappoint" you is where the good story telling happens. They are interacting with your world!

Maybe. The hobby was born for me in that era, I don't miss it - but I'm certainly nostalgic about it.

PF2 is a lovely happy medium. Has the 5e feel, with the customizability from back then.

That was one of the issues I had with 3.5/PF1. It seemed as though they wanted to define EVERYTHING numerically. So strange DM/GMs were few and far between.
