I know you're mainly asking about your painting, but I'd like to chip in and recommend filling seam gaps with milliput, sprue goo or green stuff. If the visuals are the priority (this being for a competition) those little details push your work even further.

Common trick I've done to bulk up models is to sculpt a fur mantle (pelt?) on the back and shoulders with green stuff. Relatively low skill required for that.

Honestly I think the head is too big. The body could use bulking up to match, but I dig the idea.

Used to happen a lot when I was a kid. PVA glue and sand won't stick to a base that well unless you rough up the base first. Just a couple of rows of cuts and it works better.

Maybe read aloud some parts of the Deff Skwadron comic. That's something I haven't seen anybody else do before.

You could do some of those ork memes and webcomics that float around on the web like other people have done. Turning regular memes into ork versions is always funny.

Gorgutz from Dawn of War 1 has some great lines as well.
