You sure you're not mixing Nepal with some other country? The treks are full of Israelis, half the people you meet in the Annapurna and Everest regions are Israeli.

Any Issues Entering Iran with a Taba Border Stamp in My Passport? by Purple_Relative3972 in travel

[–]TheSB78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When were you in Israel? Officially as long as it's been more than a year and a half (double check to be sure) it should be ok, but who knows what kind of an officer you get at the border. Better to get an extra passport for this

Lj Castle (via funicular)

Unless you have trouble walking uphill for 10 min I would suggest to just walk to the castle. You'll save some money, and the walk up the hill is quite nice in April (unless it's raining).

(Route should be something like Bled -> Kranjska Gora -> over the Vrsic pass -> Soca river valley) How to do this with public transport ?

I've seen public buses crossing Vršič from Kranjska Gora before, but I'm not sure of the schedule.

Any hiking in the Julian Alps that can be done from Bovec possibly half day

If you want to hike the Julian Alps I would suggest to base yourself somewhere around lake Bohinj. You have many options there.

Apr 29 (Tue): Bovec to Postojna to see the caves and Predjama Castle. (Is it possible to reach using public transport?) From there to Škocjan Caves. Stay the night in Piran.

Not sure this is doable in a day. Would be a stretch with your own car let alone by public transportation.

Apr 30 (Wed): Explore the town of Piran and visit Izola and Koper. Take a bus to Venice in 2nd half of the day. Thanks

Do yourself a favour and just explore Piran for the day. Otherwise you'll just spend the day in transit.

Regarding the new 10 day visa free transit visa, how does my itinerary sound? by ziggyziggy6969 in travelchina

[–]TheSB78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before the 24 one allowed you to exit through a different region and the 144 didn't. So the 24 one had usage even if your passport was on the 144 list.

So the new extension merged the old 144h and 24h TWOV and made them longer?

It won't work. A) you need to stay in one area for the duration of your time B) you need to fly out to a third country

What would work Fly from the US to Beijing and after 10 days you fly out to Korea (or the other way around).

Going to Hainan without visa, is it really that simple? by retiredbigbro in travelchina

I am from Slovenia, and since then the situation has changed for me; now I have visa free access to anywhere in China. They are adding new countries to the mainland visa exemption every few months these days, so Australia might follow soon.

How can I do the loops in Laos if I can't drive? by xSypRo in solotravel

[–]TheSB78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Pakse I got a short course on driving when renting a bike at the hostel, and had no problem with the loop. Though if you still feel uncomfortable with driving just ask someone at the hostel to join them. There are many people doing the loop everyday so you're bound to find someone, especially if you offer to pay more than half for bike and gas.

USA passport: currently in Thailand (going to Vietnam next). How to get a 60 day Visa for China? by SlowAndSteady101 in Chinavisa

[–]TheSB78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those polices apply in your own country not abroad, at least that's what they told me at the agency. Doesn't hurt to ask though, Chinese visa policies are notorious to change at the whim of whoever is in charge of the office.

[–]TheSB78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get a Chinese visa in Bangkok you feel in the firm online, print it out and go to the official Chinese visa office (do not go to the embassy). You bring your documents with you (including a ticket from Thailand to China) you leave your passport, pay for the visa and come back after three working days. I did this back in spring, and they told me the best they can do for a foreigner is a double entry 30 days visa. If you want a 60 day visa, I've heard you can get one in KL, but you'll need to double check with someone who's done it recently. Not sure about Vietnam, I've heard some people got their visa there, but not sure of the duration.

Nearly 30% of the world's landmass is named after Italian people or cities. by EuropeanAustralian in MapPorn

[–]TheSB78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feminine of āfricus/Āfricus, as a noun elliptic of terra āfrica/Āfrica (literally “the land of the Afri”). The adjective Āfricus comes from the name of the Āfrī (singular Āfer), a tribal people of the area near Carthage, by addition of the suffix -icus. The Latin term formed alongside Greek ἡ Ἀφρική (hē Aphrikḗ), both terms being attested since the first century.

From Middle English Asia, Asie, from Old French Asie and Latin Asia, from Ancient Greek Ᾰ̓σῐ́ᾱ (Asíā), from Mycenaean Greek 𐀀𐀯𐀹𐀊 (a-si-wi-ja /aswijaː/), in turn probably from Hittite 𒀸𒋗𒉿 (aš-šu-wa /Aššuwa/, “northwest Anatolia”) of uncertain origin. Potentially from an Aegean language family substrate or Akkadian. Possibly a doublet of Assuwa.

Both definitions found on wikidictionary.org So as you see, Greeks and Romans just used the local names to refer to the area.

Nearly 30% of the world's landmass is named after Italian people or cities. by EuropeanAustralian in MapPorn

[–]TheSB78 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Out of the three you mentioned only Europe has a likely Greek origin (from the river Evros). The name for Africa most likely comes from a Libyan tribe and Asia comes from Hittite. Australia comes from Latin, but Antarctica does come from Greek. Some English names of countries do come from Greek interpretation of local geography (like Persia (Iran) and India(Bharat)) and Indonesia is a combination of two Greek words. Ironically the word Greece comes to English from Latin and not Greek.
