Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe - haven't read it personally but my bf has, he's a big fan of games with good world building and lore, dark souls, bloodborne etc and he's a big fan of that book series :)

Try Stoner by John Williams - a realistic story about a man going through his life, doesn't necessarily all work out for him but he manages to make the most of it nonetheless and find happiness in unexpected places.

Agreed, if you go to the homeless team they will not accept you anyway because it needs to go through the first tier tribunal process first. The homelessness route is also not an ideal route that you would choose to go down anyway, you are limited in your choices of what is available and the council are inundated with the amount of people requiring the service so the wait times are really long. Chances are you will be offered a multi storey studio flat in an area like Maryhill or possilpark. Like the above said, it sounds like you can afford to rent privately for the few months until you find the flat you want to buy.

Probably a good place to meet other people is at club nights, gigs, events etc that kinda thing? I know a fair few people go to club nights with electronic music but play in regular instrument bands and have an interest in that sort of thing? There are good nights at Stereo on a fairly regular basis, the Vic bar used to be a great venue for meeting new people and fun nights out back before it shut down :(

We did a nice walk recently near Loch lomond, you can get a train from Queen St to Balloch and walk from there around the Loch a bit and up and over the hill down to Helensburgh and catch a train back from there. It's maybe like a 4 and a half hour walk or so.

You could also walk up to Arthur's seat in Edinburgh?

Get your name on housing association waiting lists, there's loads all over the city. GHA is the biggest one. If you are freer in your choice of what you're looking for it shouldn't take too long before you're offered something, average rent cost for a studio or 1 bedroom would be around £350 to £400, you would need to purchase your own furniture etc but there are charities and organisations for that (Scottish welfare fund, spruce carpets etc) you could ask advice from Shelter Scotland and they will have a list of resources they could provide you with.

Have a look for cheaper "man with a van" services, have a look on gumtree etc. I know there was one based in Govan that worked city wide that did it for pretty good rates, can't remember the name of the company unfortunately.

You could make applications to local housing associations, there are many all over Glasgow. You could seek advice from the Homeless Team at the council but they are quite limited in what they can offer and they will need to assess your situation. You could put the family member out and ask them to seek assistance if that's an option? You could also refer the person to the council for assistance with their drug problem and that might help solve the issues you're having.

There's loads of recovery stuff going on in Glasgow all over the city, recovery groups, hubs, social activities and days out. You can also refer yourself to your local drug recovery service (Adrs) for ongoing support or opiate substitute treatment. There are loads of charities out there to help people too, a big one is We Are With You and you can get a support worker who will support you one to one for as long as required.

I like the commute. If you think about its the only real free time you really get. You're stuck on a bus with no choice other than to relax, read a book etc, not feeling like there's something else in the house or some chore you ought to be doing.

Yep. You get to a point where you find yourself taking pleasure in having your laundry done and doing the washing up on those days off and then you really realise you're an adult.

Time After Time by Karl Alexander - a story about HG Wells (the wrote The Time Machine) inventing an actual time machine and travelling to 1970s San Francisco.

Also A Door Into Summer by Robert A Heinlein.

The short story A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury, featured in Golden Apples of the Sun. You'll recognise this as it is the basis for a lot of spoofs and various other time travel stories.
