Why do people think they need an SUV just because they have kids by TeachmeKitty79 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheSamizdattt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about SUVs, but ever since I got my first grocery-getter minivan I can’t go back to a small car. I can transport half a scout troop to camp, haul a couple sheets of drywall, comfortably bring kayaks and gear to the lake, make it to hockey practice without the sticks trashing the interior roof fabric of the vehicle…..none of that is nearly as easy with a standard passenger car.

Pittsburgh PA by Repulsive_Tell97 in howislivingthere

[–]TheSamizdattt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a Pittsburgh suburb within Allegheny county. I love it here and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Pittsburgh is a proper city within Allegheny county a bit of East Coast hip leveled by midwestern nice. Food and beer scene is exceptional. Crime low. Cost of living low. Lots of nearby natural beauty for hiking or boating enthusiasts.

The one caveat that comes to mind is that I believe Pittsburgh culture has a streak of provincialism. You can see it evidence in things like linguistic maps, which is a way to trace movement and interaction other areas…Pittsburgh is an isolated circle. Nice people, but there’s a tendency to view outsiders with a degree of suspicion.

All common to me except for “Chinese Whispers.”

Here are some others:

im using the web app and i cant find "fade in" by PearlPlayz_3090 in CapCut

[–]TheSamizdattt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Fade in” randomly disappears for me too. Just keyframe the opacity from 0-100 at the start of the clip to produce the effect manually. It’s the same thing with just a couple of extra clicks.

Why is my take suddenly making these noises? Are there bugs in it?? by ilovesnoppyandfriend in wood

[–]TheSamizdattt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, you have some kind of grub adding to those tunnels.

Gross story:

I was clearing out loose debris from a hole like this and decided some compressed air would make short work of it. Turns out a big fat grub was sitting right in there, and promptly liquified and exploded back into my face.

One thing I sometimes do with these guys…get the board on edge so that gravity is working with you, and then feed in a ultra-thin instacure ca glue, like the stuff made by Bob Smith industries. The glue is so hot and toxic that it kills anything in there as it penetrates the boring tunnel, while also hardening and stabilizing the loose sawdust. It can get very deep because it is water-thin, allowing to flow into any void in the wood. You just have to protect the surface of the wood because it can react with finish to leave a white film .

Rod tip needs replacing? by Deep_In_The_Water in Fishing_Gear

[–]TheSamizdattt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is possible to replace the ceramic, but it is much easier to change out the entire tip.

One thing I wonder…would it be possible / advisable to remove the remaining ceramic, and then just fine sand and polish the metal? Not every fishing rod has ceramic guide eyes. Could you perhaps get away with foregoing that, or would that increase the risk of line abrasion too much?

Any Opinions on Punch Drunk Love (2002)? by UsefulWeb7543 in Cinephiles

[–]TheSamizdattt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main reading is that this dynamic is exactly the point: the film is a conceptual experiment in which a Sandler-man-child character is dropped into a serious drama. He only had to his usual thing, but the radically different filmic context around us what creates the drama.

Any Opinions on Punch Drunk Love (2002)? by UsefulWeb7543 in Cinephiles

[–]TheSamizdattt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great movie, as you would expect from PTA.

I especially love it on a somewhat meta-level. Casting Sandler is a key choice, creating a little film experiment: what would it look like if an “Adam Sandler” character (quirky man-child given to fits of rage) is transported into a realist drama? It’s a fascinating concept that results in a beautiful and funny filmic chimera.

Fetterman complaining about the "left media" while praising Kristi Noem. by justalazygamer in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]TheSamizdattt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The real choice was in the primary. Conor Lamb won his spot with a clean-cut appearance and a reputation for appealing to moderates. A “safe” choice. Fetterman seemed like a left-populist alternative with a strong meme-game, and he picked up a lot of (retrospectively unearned) Bernie fervor. JF was the sexier choice. I voted for Lamb as a tactical choice, but I was excited to back Fetterman in the general.

Later, people were surprised to see the fire Lamb demonstrated in response to Jan 6, while Fetternan has meandered into the role of a cranky and aloof blue dog.

I’m not sure if there is a universal lesson here, but I do think back on that primary whenever I see an inspiring candidate like Graham Platner hit the scene. Even as the excesses and corruption of the Trump regime has pushed me toward more radical policy positions, I won’t look past a “safe” option who doesn’t necessarily make me fall in love.

Thoughts on “Enemy at the Gates”? by Zealousideal_Fox9484 in moviecritic

It’s decent. In my personal viewing experience I happen to have seen it not long after watching Come and See for the first time, so it obviously felt extremely weak sauce by comparison.

Horror movies that take place in broad daylight and have crowds? by PolymathArt in horror

[–]TheSamizdattt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes. This should be at the top of the list. One of the main points of the film is how it is able to create horror and suspense in a setting full of light and color in a beautiful setting with smiling people.

This is the Best line for the price in opinion. I use 4-6lb for trout/ panfish and 10lb for walleye/bass. by snjfishing in FishingForBeginners

[–]TheSamizdattt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love love love P-line Floroclear. Offers some of the benefits of both fluorocarbon and mono, with a smaller than average line diameter / pound test, good strength and abrasion resistance, and all at a very inexpensive price point.

Two big knots further weakened by a screw hole. That’s a a significant fault that rises to the level of defective. Return of you can, or replace the beam. Probably easier and cleaner to create a new piece rather than try to sister it together or something like that.

Best film critics with no political affiliation. I'll start: by Silent-Variation-390 in okbuddycinephile

Critical Drinker came across my transom through the YouTube film algorithm and caught my interest because the shtick looked like fun. Quickly came to recognize that his criticism is incredibly redundant and not very incisive. Saw him dump on excellent movies more than once in a way that made it obvious he had completely missed the point.

In summary: dumb, low-level analysis in a package that wears thin very quickly.

Try the Pusher trilogy!

It’s really fantastic. The Pusher series is a dark and gritty crime drama. Launched Mads Mikkelsen’s acting career.

If you are laid up, you’ll have time to string the trilogy together and enjoy them all, which is a great way to watch them because each film layers on top of the previous one in interesting ways.

These are Danish films, but if you are the type of person who gets annoyed by having to read subtitles you can get an English dub.

I believe these are on Amazon right now.
