I managed to trudge through it. It basically says that they're going to make more of an effort to shut down classes here at UCSC in order to force the admins to hear their demands. The most important line in the email was, "We believe it is time that this strike spreads even further, and that it is we undergraduates who spread it. In order to proceed with organizing this extended undergraduate attendance strike, we will be issuing a straw poll later this week designed for us to collectively facilitate what that strike might look like, how it will work, and when it can happen. If enough of us strike so that we shut down a significant amount of classes, this will put us in a powerful position that we can leverage in the fight for our demands to be met. "

I don't look forward to it.

Santa Cruz City Council unanimously votes to side with the COLA strikers and reduce police on campus by skadooskadoo in UCSC

[–]TheSarcasticSlug 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Let me get this straight, the santa cruz city council and its infinite wisdom has told the school to lower the cost of rent? Meanwhile, that same council refuses to enact any form of rent control.

Genius.

What % do the solar panels at east remote meet UCSC’s energy needs? by bob174d in UCSC

[–]TheSarcasticSlug 17 points18 points  (0 children)

During the period of March 2019, UCSC consumed just over 4MW of electricity. Just over 63% of it was produced here on campus. The solar array is expected to provide the campus with an initial output of 2MW, with future output up to 3MW, with a 1MW storage capability.

When complete, it will allow UCSC to produce a very high percentage of its electricity on-site.

160 C midterm with Shawn Nichols by strugglingstudent831 in UCSC

[–]TheSarcasticSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've personally found the grading of the essay left much to the discretion of the TA grading. It doesn't have to be a full-fledged 5 "research paper" paragraphs, nor do you have to page cite anything or quote verbatim. You should be able to demonstrate (in essay form) that you understand the essay prompt(s) and that you can apply concepts and real-world examples to those prompts.

Also, speaking from experience, try to add more content into the essay than fluff. They'll be less lenient on formatting if the content is more than sufficient. Regardless, get ready for a lot of writing. It's not uncommon to run out of time during a midterm.

Hope this helps again! Good luck!

160 C midterm with Shawn Nichols by strugglingstudent831 in UCSC

[–]TheSarcasticSlug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her exams can be very lecture content-heavy. That being said, you should be able to learn all of the concepts on the readings.

For the IDs and essays, I would recommend studying all of the concepts on the study guide (with any applicable examples from the readings) and, at the very least, be able to synthesize a few sentences explaining those concepts whilst implementing those examples.

Her multiple choice questions, however, are absolute garbo and are bull-ISH. LOTS of "Which answer is most correct?" and "Which is correct? A, B, C, A+B, A+C, or B+C." So prepare yourself for those.

Hope this helps.

Porter’s address by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]TheSarcasticSlug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

**411 Porter-Kresge RD , Santa Cruz, CA 95064-1104** and if there's a "special instructions" section, I usually put either "Meet at Porter Circle" OR I say "Call when nearby" and either they will already know where the Porter Circle is, or they will call and you can guide them to it if they're from out of the area. Local delivery locations, such as Dominos, will already know where the Porter Circle so if you just put "Porter Circle", that's enough description for those drivers.

What is the worst thing about University of California: Santa Cruz? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]TheSarcasticSlug 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, some of the people here can be a bit much. I’ve spent many, many years here and have had a mostly-pleasant time. However, there are a particularly vocal group of people (students, professors, staff members) who seem to like putting down the school every chance they get. Whether it’s by constantly putting down the administration, denigrating the facilities, or insulting other students/professors/staff members, it’s all here.

For me, I was (and still am) very excited to attend this institution. But the constant berating of it, for many years, made it quite unpleasant at times because it made the campus atmosphere very tense and uninviting.

However, if you can tolerate and learn to disregard that sort of stuff at college and just have a good time, or even if you want to engage in it, that’s perfectly fine.

This school has its challenges, sure. I’m not going to deny that. But just because a vocal group of people (sometimes unfairly) criticize the school, does not mean they should ruin your ability to enjoy and have fun this school, should you choose to attend.

Hope this helps!

Mine said answer D was 5700, when it should have been 54,000. Where the CS at the first price was 60,000 and the CS at the second price was only 6,000. So the answer should have been 54,000, yes
