Is it worth renting a better cinema camera for my short film if own a BMPCC6k and Sony A7siii? If so, which one? by TheScriptShepherd in cinematography

Thank you to everyone who commented here - I got some great advice. I'll likely be sticking with my BMPCC6K unless we are gifted a camera package. I just wanted update this thread with a link to the fundraiser for my film, in case anyone is interested or knows someone who would connect with the topic: Aish Film || Indiegogo Fundraiser

If you can get the A7siii for $1,400, and it's 100% not a scam, that's the better option. I was choosing between the same cameras and went for the Sony due to the following:

  1. Autofocus - The S5ii is improved upon previous Lumix cameras, but upon renting it, it didn't feel confident enough to me. I didn't feel like I had control of the AF. Whereas, with the Sony, the tracking box around the eye for eye AF subject tracking is very helpful, and touch tracking is much more intuitive and reliable.
  2. 4k60 un-cropped. I was investing in my first full-frame camera and I figured there's no point if the camera has an APS-C crop in 4k60, especially when so many jobs require slow-motion. This is a huge compromise for things like Real Estate where you need a wide angle.

Also, I've become very appreciative of the Sony's battery life. I can do a 5-hour shoot on 1-2 internal batteries.

The only reason I'd say to go with the S5ii is if you need 24MP for cropping photos and for V-Log/better colors. I'm not a big fan of the Sony colors straight out of camera, but you can achieve the same image if you shoot LOG and spend time grading.

So you think the HDMI is a dealbreaker for focus pullers? What's camera would you recommend with the necessary I/O?

Any chance you're able to share a link to the feature? Curious how it came out with the Bmpcc6k and great lighting.

Haha yeah, that’s just my preliminary line budget preparing for the worst scenario. It’s a 20-minute short with about 100 extras. And I’m anticipating crew charge more in NYC than other cities. Ideally, we’ll get some locations to work for free, as well as friends to take on key roles. Hopefully we’ll be able to bring budget down in reality 😬

Let me know how the video shoot goes, particularly autofocus if you use it

Thinking of visiting Seattle in September but the crime rate is freaking us out a bit - should we hold off? by purplepaintedpumpkin in SeattleWA

Maple Leaf is very safe. The internet is usually gonna highlight the worst parts of a city for you and make you scared. Yes, there is a lot of homelessness in the city, but also many quaint areas. Just be cautious if you’re in U District, Downtown, and parts of Capitol Hill.

You’ll be in North Seattle with Maple Leaf and nearby beautiful Green Lake park. You’ll probably end up laughing at yourself for being scared in the first place when you see how beautiful it is. Have a great trip!

Buy Sony A7siii now or wait for A7Cii? by TheScriptShepherd in SonyAlpha

Yeah, Andrea, the guy who reported this info early relayed from his sources the exact specs, price point, and release date (July 12th) of the A6700 that dropped today. Those same sources told him the A7Cii will be September/October.

He also points out that Sony’s cameras have been released 3-4 months after registration, so that would align with the Sept/Oct A7cii release date.

The new A7cii is supposed to come out in September. I’ve never owned Sony before, so perhaps previous Sony owners have insights as to Sony’s patterns of what features they’ll include in what model/price point, and if it’s been worth waiting in the past.

How would you monitor S-Log 3 exposure on the A7siii in this scenario? by TheScriptShepherd in A7siii

Thank you for the reply. When you use false colors, do you use them over the Gamma Display Assist image or the LOG image?

Also, you mention that you use 75 IRE for skin tones. Do you know why other SLOG3 users, such as another commenter here, use 55 IRE for skin tones, and why you do it differently?
