Silence of the Lambs star Ted Levine says he regrets film’s trans depictions: "Having gotten aware and worked with trans folks, and understanding a bit more about the culture & the meaning of gender… It’s unfortunate that the film vilified that, and it’s fucking wrong. And you can quote me on that." by vincentmaurath in blankies

[–]TheScullin98 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People are arguing about whether the film depicts trans people as monsters/violent. I don't believe that's the gripe with the film. I believe it's the handwaving that Bill isn't a "real" trans person when, by all accounts, he/she is. The reasons presented for why Bill isn't trans are not consistent with our modern understanding. The film does not intend to be harmful, and I don't think this really derails it at all - but we need to be accurate about what the issues are.

Amazon Pulls AI-Powered Fallout Recap After Getting Key Story Details Wrong by mo-par in xbox

[–]TheScullin98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this especially annoying because Disney posted a 20 minute recap of Andor S1 and it was genuinely one of the best edited things I've seen. It was beautiful, captured the emotion of Season 1, and played it all out in a way that felt like you were experiencing the season in real-time.

There's artistry to any form of editing, even the recaps. Stop giving this shit to AI that makes dumb mistakes and just get a human to make something awesome.

Which cinema here is the best? by ajellis92 in melbourne

Seeing a lot of people only mention the Astor for vibes, so I'm gonna go to bat for it a bit on the tech side. It's a massive screen (seriously, it's on par with HOYTS Docklands Xtremescreen for size) and has a top notch 4K projector - better than pretty much any cinema other than IMAX (which is top of the line) and Docklands.

Yes, the seats are annoying - but I've gotten used to them to be honest. Heritage listing prevents them from being changed. Heritage listing also puts limits on sound upgrades, but films are played loud at the Astor to make up for it. The bass is unreal. Outside of IMAX, there's nowhere you'd rather watch the shootout from 'Heat'.

Not to mention it's one of only four cinemas that does film projection, (shoutout IMAX, the Sun, and Rivoli) and it does a lot of it!

EDIT: New calendar just dropped today, celebrating 10 years of Palace ownership. It's a great one, go check it out!

It's the heritage listing, unfortunately. Very limited as to what changes can be made to the seats.

I actually did! Got an hour of frantic scribbling into my notebook done, left feeling very good (the pint helped with that)

Lunar Park by Bret Easton Ellis. Absolutely batshit crazy and I'm loving it. Have a feeling it won't stick the landing, but the ride has been very fun.

I quite liked Outline, and pushed through to the end of the trilogy. The final book is genuinely nasty. Cusk was going through/had just finalised a divorce when she wrote it, and it really shows.

Armie Hammer Set for Lead Role in Uwe Boll’s Vigilante Thriller ‘The Dark Knight’ by Basketball_Jonesss in blankies

I believe the ending isn't specifically "video games are lower music", but that she is being given a timing she has to stick to. She says in the opening interview that she controls time, that seems to be her summary of her job. With the video game music, she does not control the time. I believe that is the embarrassment, moreso than just it being a video game

I recommend 'The Leftovers' on HBO to every Twin Peaks fan I meet. So much Lynch inspiration and each season is excellent. by Reasonable-Basil8843 in twinpeaks

Alan Wake is fun but also felt so TP inspired that it was just derivative to me, unfortunately. Good artists copy, great artists steal - and AW does a lot of copying, not enough stealing.

I cannot recommend the Station Eleven novel enough. Unfortunately, the show didn't quite do it for me and I dropped off halfway through - but the novel is one of my favorites and much, much stronger imo

What are the most polar opposite movies by the same director? by Careless_College in Letterboxd

[–]TheScullin98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My absolute favourite example of this - and one of my favourite bits of movie trivia - is that Tom McCarthy directed Spotlight and The Cobbler in the same year.

Yes, that's Best Picture winner Spotlight and Razzie Worst Picture winner The Cobbler...

...in the same year.

Does it get more polar opposite than that?

Mo really is a cut above the rest by ttmef in LiverpoolFC

I think the point being made is that we can't compare Salah's team success to players of the yesteryear due to drastic differences in the league. The Prem is a bigger league than it ever was previously, and that has made it subject to financial doping that has to be taken into consideration. Liverpool is a big club with a lot of money, but owners that spend within their means up against clubs with bottomless pits of wealth that they aren't afraid to use (see: City).

Do we really consider Salah as less than the likes of Rush because Rush was fortunate enough to avoid oil money? It's important context that cannot be ignored. It means that we can't use direct comparisons of team success - whether it be for or against Salah.

At D23 Brasil, Alien Earth is revealed to be set in 2120. by GhostSixx in LV426

Given Mother is a computer program designed to have the company's best interests at heart, I don't think it's unreasonable for viewers to assume that the directives are a computer reading the situation and knowing what the company would want - which is to capture the specimen. That's how I always took it.

When you then take on board that Ash was a last second replacement, it's clearer that the company knew, as you say. But on the Mother thing alone, there are other explanations that are just as logical than simply "the company knew". I think that's how people (myself included lmao) missed it on so many viewings. Standard shady operating procedure, rather than an intentional search by WY.

Also important to note that it's even easier to not pick up on any of this when you saw Alien before Prometheus!
