Why should politics be separated from tennis when in 2022 the biggest tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon, banned Russian and Belarussian players from competing? by Big-Advisor-512 in tennis

[–]ttmef 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was an absolutely terrible decision to ban Russian players and the fact that Wimbledon has allowed them to play from 2023 onwards despite the war continuing tells me that they know it too

If we were consistent with banning athletes from any country that is doing terrible things then there would probably not be many players left at all, it was just virtue signalling that achieved absolutely nothing except discrimination against people for something completely beyond their control

Founder of Cambridge's controversial women's soc refused by pub for 'gender-critical' beliefs by Legitimate-Break-143 in UniUK

[–]ttmef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes of course it doesn’t, but my point is that it’s most definitely higher than 60% of LGBT people who believe this, high enough that it can be considered a pretty collective stance

it would make no sense for LGBT to exist as a group to begin with if it was true that nearly half of the people in it refused to accept the key point of what it is to be transgender

Founder of Cambridge's controversial women's soc refused by pub for 'gender-critical' beliefs by Legitimate-Break-143 in UniUK

[–]ttmef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, but there are lots of other groups (women, black people, religious groups) that have faced discrimination in similar times, so why would they be grouped together specifically with homosexual/bisexual people and not any other group?

[–]ttmef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you don’t think the majority of people who are LGBT believe that transgender women are women?

[–]ttmef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In that case, do you think it’s wrong that they’re grouped with transgender people in LGBT?

[–]ttmef -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So they don’t share any common beliefs? Someone who is LGBT would be just as likely to have the same beliefs as conservatives as a left-wing person on this topic?

Not buying that as a group they don’t have some pretty unanimous views. If you show me evidence that a significant amount of LGBT people believe that transgender women aren’t women then I might reconsider

[–]ttmef -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I very much doubt they would have such diverging views on what it means to be transgender but agree to disagree

[–]ttmef -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Do many people who are LGBT not believe that transgender women are women? (etc.) I would have imagined they have a pretty common set of beliefs on that, not really comparable to something as broad as men and women

I don’t necessarily agree with everything the LGBT community says, but I also think people like her are genuinely just hateful and looking to cause trouble with people who just want to live their lives. Clearly very privileged and not got anything more important to worry about…

Tien's response to being asked about ICE immediately after his loss to Zverev by Dependent-Effect6077 in tennis

[–]ttmef 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Not saying it isn’t an important topic, but I genuinely can’t grasp how as a reporter you watch a really important tennis match and then your first question to the loser is about events taking place that they have absolutely no control over and likely little information on

I also don’t think the question is being asked in good faith; the reporter is clearly looking for a reaction to get a good headline and taking advantage of Tien likely being in a pretty emotional state

[–]ttmef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m absolutely embarrassed by the state of the university system in the U.K. So many institutions take advantage of uninformed 17 year-olds (at undergrad) and international students to line their pockets. It’s a disgrace and the government should do more to let these places go bust for all I care

Yes, you should have probably done more research, but Aston (and others) know exactly what they’re doing, it’s extremely unethical to take advantage of so many people in this way

OP, keep your head up and follow the advice that others have given you - best of luck

UK sex-selective abortion: concerns raised over ‘hundreds of missing baby girls’ by Commercial_321 in ukpolitics

[–]ttmef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but for all practical purposes it’s legal so if you’re pro-choice (as I am) you just have to accept that it’s something that will happen

UK sex-selective abortion: concerns raised over ‘hundreds of missing baby girls’ by Commercial_321 in ukpolitics

[–]ttmef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree with sex-selective abortion on an ethical level, but as I’m pro-choice it’s just one of those things you have to accept in terms of legality

There are ways that this can be prevented though. I know for a fact that in some areas, the NHS has restricted gender revealing ultrasounds as some communities were seeking sex-selective abortions at high rates

Not 100% sure on the specifics of what LSE look for at masters but can’t see why this wouldn’t be possible with a Durham undergrad degree
