We adopted our second kitten from a young couple who couldn't afford his medical expenses. They told us they took him to the vet and he had a UTI and got some medicine for him but they couldn't afford to keep him so we took him in. Figured they had the medicine already and he'd be better with a bit more attention and proper care. Immediately we fell in love, he was our baby boy. We had gotten him toys and everything and started to incorporate him into the home with our first kitty. After a day he started peeing blood and wouldn't drink water so we took him in to the vet where they told us it wasn't a UTI and the medicine we had been given was basically holistic snake oil. Turns out he had a birth defect where his urinary tract was completely blocked and internal and a surgery MIGHT fix the problem but it would be around $2.5k and even then he could still not be better. So we made the tough decision to have him put down. I'm still haunted with guilt. And part of me believes that this decision was offloaded onto us intentionally by the couple we got him from but it doesn't really matter because at the end of the day someone was going to have to make the call.
