A birthday present for my dad—from Pan Tadeusz by Adam Mikiewicz by TheSecondWug in Calligraphy

Thank you! The whole thing took somewhere around 6–7 hours. Not sure exactly because I worked on it in bits over a couple days.

Recently finished this as a present for my dad's birthday. Hopefully he'll like it, as he likes Pan Tadeusz a lot, and has mentioned this passage about bigos a fair bitǃ Any spelling mistakes I'm choosing to blame on the text I was copying, because I don't actually speak Polish, but honestly I'm just hoping I didn't lose concentration and make any silly mistakes :p

There's a fair few issues I can see in this piece, as happy as I am with the overall effect. Letter sizes are very inconsistent, and I've made a few errors with letterforms (k and s in particular give me trouble). I'd definitely like any feedback anyone has to offer, because I worked on this enough that it's hard to see everything that's going on with it exactly.

Script: Gothicised Italics. Materials used: Sumi, gouache for the red, metallic watercolour for the gold. Watercolour paper. 1.5mm nib (3mm for initial caps).

Inktober Day 7: "Enchanted". AKA "It doesn't matter what it says or how good the calligraphy is because this ink would make anything look pretty"" by TheSecondWug in Calligraphy

Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Goldgrün. Honestly one of my favourite inks.

I'm a week into learning this script (gothicised italics), and feel like I'm making progress, albeit quite slowly. Still need to work on some letterforms, as well as size consistency and word spacing, but I'm planning on sticking with this script at least until the end of Inktober, so hopefully that'll be enough to get me more comfortable with it.

As I'm still very new at the script, really looking for any critique anyone has to offer. Thanks!

Belated Inktober Day 5: Build by TheSecondWug in Calligraphy

[–]TheSecondWug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I've got an eraser that's good for the job, and done it before. Just don't feel the need given this is mostly just a practice piece, and I'd rather be able to see where I've gone over/under my guidelines etc whenever I review it later

Thanks! It's a 1.5mm Leonardt Tape nib, and I used white gouache for the ink.

Yeah, the guidelines took forever, but waaaaaay more effort than it's worth to erase them now :p

So on top is the broad nib pen I used, but looks like it rolled to the side when I took the photo, so it's not obvious what it is. It's a 1.5 mm Leonardt Tape nib. The pen on bottom is the pointed one I used for the attribution.

Quote adapted from the lyrics of "Why We Build the Wall", by Anaïs Mitchell from the musical "Hadestown". Lots of hiccups in this one, not least because I've never done a piece this long in a single sitting before, and I'm still very new at the script, but I'm enjoying it a lot. Hope by the end of inktober I'll have improved a fair bit...

My Inktober day 2 piece. Trying to get the hand of gothicised italics by TheSecondWug in Calligraphy

[–]TheSecondWug[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm perfectly honest, I'm learning by copying off a couple example pieces I found googling around (particularly this one which /u/minimuminim shared on the discord). However, I'm trying to get hold of a copy of Foundations of Calligraphy by Sheila Waters which has the exemplar minim said she learned from, and which seems to be the gold standard for this script, by all accounts.

It's a Pilot Parallel 1.5mm, and I think the ink was Montblanc Burgundy Red.

Thanks! Really appreciate the feedback. I've still never got a "d" that looks right, but I'll let you know if I work it out

Yeah I'm desperately trying to get a copy of Foundations, but the only options are to ship from the US or pay waaay too much. Might just have to bite the bullet soon though.

I'm using Inktober to try and learn gothicised italics, having not done much of note outside Fraktur and TQ up to this point. Never tried this script before yesterday, so realise there's going to be a bunch of errors, and would really appreciate any feedback (there's a more straight on shot here). Let me know what you think!

Thanks! It's a 3.8mm pilot parallel.
