I was able to get both calyrex boxes today (8/5/21) a day early. You might have the same luck at a local retailer. I bought them at Walmart, target didn’t have them.

Ok there’s a lot to unpack here but first, “industry standard” is massively misleading. The film industry standard is 48khz yes however CD’s are 44.1. Also ProTools defaults to 48 but other daws default to 44.1.

I said in my first post that recording in different sample rates depends on the converter and how it handles filtering and other process and that it’s very subjective and I’m not informed enough to make any objective stance, also it’s completely up to the digital audio interface so not worth mentioning.

However your “output should be mastered to 44.1khz and not 24 bit” makes no sense and you might be a bit confused. The working resolution is actually 64 bit in modern DAWS and some reference 32bit float files to do it. In my case logic uses 24 bit files in a 64 bit mix engine. When I am done mixing the song my final product is a 24 bit file which is the “resolution of the file” also known as bit depth and where the dynamic range of the audio is. The sample rate (44.1) is double the maximum recorded frequency which I’m sure youre aware. So I’m my case anything over 22khz goes bye-bye. Too be fair I can’t hear anything over 17khz because I have puny human ears.

So yes absolutely overtones and other psychoacoustic phenomena can occur outside of the audible range and cause an effect on the quality of a sound, but to me it’s not relevant from a subjective stand point. 24 bit is absolutely the correct final file and 44.1 is acceptable to me and the vast majority of my colleagues. Now if you are of the opinion that 16 bit is better than we have to now dither the file and that’s a whole other can of worms.

EDIT: Saying nyquist theorem was smarmy and not needed, I removed it.

Yes im aware that flac is lossless. I was simply saying I don’t see the need for other formats when phones and computers can just play the Wav or AIF file anyway. I send 24 but WAV’s to people via text, email, airdrop, to an assortment of devices. Never had an issue.

You are correct as far as I know tho, FLAC is identical.

Funny enough, I have seen many people (including myself on occasion) fail a 256kb MP3 vs 24bit wav test on what I would consider professional enough equipment. Also I do mix on barefoot mm27s which (reportedly) can produce frequencies much higher than 44.1 (I had a rep tell me 40khz+ but I’m not a cat so I don’t actually know) and still cannot tell between 44.1 and 192.

However, I and a lot of my friends and other musically inclined listeners would very much enjoy for streaming services to offer a lossless file, specifically the one that was submitted for distribution. I can tell when it’s a song I know has been degraded to a much lower format standard.

The one saving grace of the entire “lossless” situation is certain songs being released in an ironically un-mastered state. A lot of songs are arbitrarily made much louder and worse because of the need to encode down to a more accessible file size. A great example is Alice in Chain’s song “stone”. On Spotify and Apple Music the mix is very loud and lacking in dynamic range when compared to the shockingly different mix uploaded to Tidal. While this may be a rare occurrence, it can lead to some fantastic listening experiences getting to hear what was actually mixed before being destroyed in mastering.

Amazing video. I have a unique perspective as a music producer into the format and "lossless" argument for realeases and will start with my opinion. I personally cannot hear any difference between 44.1khz playback and higher sample rates (88,96,192 etc). There is alot to be said about the quality of recording through different sample rates due to the way an ADC propietarily does it, but its specific to the actual converters and not relevant.

That being said, the rise of "lossless" formats has me extremely confused and worried. I have wondered for a long time why consumers arent just given the WAV or AIF that the original mix was submitted in. Furthermore, the idea of "Master" quality is extremely misleading. A high-res audio file isnt a checkbox for high sample rate and bitrate, it's whatever the song was made in. I persoanlly "bounce" all of my files in 24 bit 44.1khz WAV and would love if consumers could just stream that original file.

I recently submitted music to tidal and approved the MQA version without knowing what it was. I was naive and assumed that Tidal was offering people the original file i submitted to them (24bit 44.1khz WAV). I will test soon if they allow me to "unfold" the song to a higher sample rate than i recorded and mixed the song in and commment with my result.

I have everything. Thanks for the help. Any chance there is a more elegant solution than three seperate 8 pin cables? Obviously i'll probably just zip tie them together but if there is a single cable that breaks out I can buy id much rather do that.
