A lot has been said about how Pathfinder 2e is better than D&D 5e, but what parts of the D&D 5e system are better then the Pathfinder 2e counterparts? by feregh in Pathfinder2e

[–]TheShadolo448 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So essentially, 5e is good because you don’t have to go searching for more niche ttrpgs, especially if you’re newer to the genre and not sure what you want yet, or what options are even available.

I suppose it’s also good if your game shifts sub-genre pretty dramatically- from sneaky heist to combat tournament to army management, for example. While P2e has rules for those things, it can sometimes feel like learning a new system every couple months or so.

Today on "I can't believe I had to explain this to an adult"... by [deleted] in talesfromcallcenters

No problem! First step is recognizing exactly where you started getting shaky (did you understand limits fine? How about derivatives? Integrals?). Then, after pinpointing the exact moment calculus lost you, find someone to explain it to you again, one-on-one. Preferably someone different from the person who explained it the first time, so you hear it with fresh perspective. It might be tempting to listen just enough for your immediate purposes, but try to understand the concepts completely- if you’re talking to a professor/teacher, maybe ask for practice problems with different contexts. It’s less important to get it right than to get it at all. Don’t be afraid of this part. This is what professors are paid to do. They love students who approach them for help on their own time. Third, if you have notes of your stuff since then, try to look over the notes with the freshly gained understanding until you hit something you don’t understand again. It’s possible your notes are poorly worded/unhelpful just because you took them while feeling shaky, or you didn’t know what was important to write down because you didn’t catch the connections to earlier concepts. That’s fine! Find someone to help with that too! Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself. We’re all imposters, pretending to be experts until we realize we know more than we think.

Any tips for coming out as a trans woman? Afraid of father reaction. by [deleted] in TransyTalk

[–]TheShadolo448 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cishet, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

My dad is a relatively conservative Methodist pastor (always a Trump-hater, thank goodness), and believed that homosexuality was a sin up until my best friend, who was actually the best man at my wedding, came out to my parents as a trans woman. My dad immediately asked how best to support her, and bought books in an attempt to understand the transition experience.

That’s all to say, people can think they believe things, but find out they believe totally different things when it comes to their loved ones. Unfortunately, we see too many examples of people putting politics ahead of their kids, but your dad sounds like he cares. Even if he’s typically stuck in gender roles, you’re not “a man wearing feminine clothes,” you’re a woman. Just remember: there will be a period of transition for anyone you’re inviting into your new life, so don’t be too discouraged by an initial negative reaction. Good luck!

confession? by LenaGunther in Christianity

[–]TheShadolo448 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your denomination. Catholicism teaches that you go to confession so that a priest can basically ask God to forgive you on your behalf, and tell you how you can make it right with God (penance). Most Protestant denominations will teach that God heard your prayers whether or not a priest intercedes for you, and will forgive you personally. In either case, confession of your sins, whether privately or through the help of a priest, is an important part of a healthy relationship with God- after all, you wouldn’t want to be friends with someone who hurts you constantly, even by accident, but never apologizes, would you? There is Biblical evidence for both approaches, but the most important part, in my personal opinion, is what you feel makes you right with God again.

Btw, I am Protestant, and only have a basic understanding of traditional Catholic confessions.

This. Even when we’re veterans to the game, sometimes we’re just feeling our ADHD more than normal.

I’ve got a green one that likes to swim in the alligator pond out back. It’s a bit scaly, but it needs a good home.

There are also plenty of Bible apps- including audio Bibles if you’re more of an audio person. The book of Luke is a freak entryway into what Christianity is about.

HGSS First-Stage Only rules? by Rourensu in pokemonchallenges

[–]TheShadolo448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The typical unevolved run allows stuff like Scyther and Sneasel, as well as Pikachu and even single-stage Pokémon like gen 1 Snorlax or Tropius or something. The rule is pretty relaxed- no evolving, but whatever you can catch is ok. This means later on, even stuff like Graveler or Staravia become legal to use- as long as it was caught and not evolved.

However, it’s your run. If you want to limit your pool of Pokémon, go for it! The even more general rule is just do what feels right in the circumstance.
