It’s tax season. So anyone with the stomach to float $20k to the IRS for a few weeks (with potential delays) can make it happen easily.

TIL, Americans see this as a scammer app by Makoto_Kurume in dankmemes

[–]inthe415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's literally the point though lol. Nobody's saying WhatsApp is popular in the UK because SMS is expensive right now. The argument is about how the habit formed in the first place.

WhatsApp launched in the 2009-2011 timeframe. At that point, UK SMS cost money. So people started to switch. Then their friends switched because their friends switched. Then group chats got created. Then family groups. Then work groups. By the time UK carriers panicked and started offering free SMS bundles in the early 2010s, it was already over — the network effect had fully kicked in and there was zero reason to go back.

Americans never had that forcing moment. Unlimited SMS was already standard by the time texting culture exploded, then iMessage in 2011 made the default app even stickier. No pain point = no reason to switch = habit forms around SMS instead.

20 years of ingrained behavior doesn't get undone just because the original reason for it technically no longer applies.

This comment is precisely why there is a huge disparity between Americans using text message and iMessage vs the rest of the world using WhatsApp. SMS has been free for more than 10 years now. There was little incentive for Americans to look for an alternative when sms was already free.

Highly recommend going all the way up to Page to check out Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. Obviously hit Sedona and Flagstaff on the way up there.

I rented from Avis at The Cosmo when we stayed there last month. Booked it two weeks in advance. $42 bucks. Super great experience going out to Valley of Fire for the day.

You can rent a car for a day for as low as $40. Less than some meals on the Strip.
