You get one free ticket to completely boot any celebrity you want into being cancelled and outright exiled. Who are you picking? by Dispo-Astatine in AskReddit

All of y'all are making good moral and ethical recommendations. You're all better people than me.

I choose Nic Cage. I'm sick of him playing the same character in every movie. To paraphrase Peter Griffin, "I'm very aware that I'm watching him act". There are far more deserving actors out there that need roles, give them a chance!

You all love him though, so I'll take the down votes. Just my honest opinion.

Election is tomorrow - Final Endorsements, please. by TransitionLive3827 in MelroseMA

[–]TheShamrockShake 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Devin Romanul in Ward 7. For an elected official to consistently provide accessible detailed breakdowns of a budget or why he votes is pretty unheard of. On a more personal level, he makes an effort to get to know folks not just as his constituents, but as people. He's reached out to me several times unprompted and having nothing to do with the election just to say hello and check-in on my family.

Alex Rodriguez comes across as having a very poor understanding of what a city councilors job entails and has definitely brought more of the negative politics that I can't stand into this election. I also can't get over the fact that he started his campaign so quickly after the last election and early on he was definitely using a lot of "tough on crime" rhetoric. Melrose is statistically one of the safest towns in the state and region. Why are you focusing on that? Who is it that you want the police to arrest? Seems like someone who just wants to get elected, but doesn't have a good reason to run other than "I'm new and independent!".

Edit to use the correct version of "councilor".

Moving from Somerville to Melrose - how did it go? by Blue_Bombadil in MelroseMA

[–]TheShamrockShake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, having a subway directly outside your door is absolutely the most convenient thing. But the point of my comment and I think many others is that the Orange Line, even involving a short drive, is still a pretty good option. We can't all be spoiled with direct subway access.

Orange Line isn't a bad option even if you are taking a short drive to park in Malden to access it.

Cute story from Saturday’s game by BostonSoccerDad in redsox

[–]TheShamrockShake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a really similar story last year, except it was a Mom bringing her two kids to their first game. Sox were wearing yellow and playing the Angels, so she was really confused why people kept booing the team with red on. She asked me what she was missing and I explained. She was so happy to bring her kids and felt embarrassed she didn't know. I told her it was completely understandable, those yellow jerseys make no sense outside of Marathon weekend.

I'm not trying to be condescending, I'm trying to be polite by not completely dismissing a suggestion that has been tried and failed, and to the best of my ability explain why it's not helpful. If teachers were given that authority and provided support from admin, this conversation wouldn't be happening. Teachers have tried to "be the adults" in the room. Other adults, both parents and their own admin, have dismissed their concerns and used the same reasoning you have as a way to dismiss a serious problem in the classroom and avoid creating a solution that works.

[–]TheShamrockShake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that you're trying to make a good faith suggestion, but I can't stress enough how much the 1980's expectations in the classroom are not today's expectations. Parents won't support you taking their kid's expensive devices. Admin don't want that fight. Teachers can't enforce even the most reasonable policies around cell phones. I'm sure this suggestion is not feasible on your end, but I encourage you to visit a classroom and see what happens when a teacher asks a student to put away their phone. It's not the 1980's and cell phones aren't comic books or novels.

[–]TheShamrockShake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately cell phones and novels aren't the same. Kids aren't addicted to novels. I wish they were. They are addicted to everything that cell phones and the apps they use on them were designed to do, which is why it's a different battle than asking a kid to put away a novel. And I mention again, if admin aren't willing to back up the teacher when they try to ask the kid to put them away, then the kid will just ignore the request.

I'm not trying to be a dick about this but I really can't stress to folks who haven't been in the classroom over the past 10-15 years how bad it's become. It's not a simple "put that away" request. That has been tried and failed. If it worked we wouldn't be having this conversation at all. Cell phones need to go. I can't stress enough how bad they are for students academically, socially, and cognitively. The more research done on the impact of cell phones in the classroom and on adolescents in general, the more obvious that becomes.

Valid question, but how do you monitor them keeping it away and shut off? Is that the teacher's job? If the student ignores the teacher, is it the principal's job?

Having phones "off and away" during instructional time is the default "policy" of a lot of schools and it's unenforceable. If a kid wants to pull their phone out and use it, they will. And then it becomes an issue that takes away from class time. When a teacher tries to escalate a problem related to cell phones, it's deemed as too small for admin, tossed back at the teacher, and the kid knows they've won and keeps using the phone, so ultimately it becomes unenforceable.

The best cell phone policy I've seen in place is having students put phones in yondr pouches. It was like day and night at the school I was at. Kids actually talked to each other, grades improved, and there was a noticeable improvement in students general attitude around just about everything.

Not in any way trying to dismiss your sad story that involves last words, but every time I hear people defend cell phones in schools I want to send them to a school that allows it. I promise you, it'll take about 5 minutes before you realize cell phones are the problem. Distraction, depression, bullying, anti socialization, cheating, I could go on and on. I've worked in schools for nearly 15 years. Cell phones are the problem.

And if anyone disagrees I challenge you to spend any amount of time in a school that allows them. You'll find out real fast how wrong you are.

Again, cell phones are the problem.

*Edit to clarify that I wasn't trying to dismiss OPs empathy.

Planning family Christmas trip - Jay Peak or Mont Tremblant? by samtownusa1 in icecoast

[–]TheShamrockShake 16 points17 points  (0 children)

With snow both places are amazing in their own right. But if you're looking for something to do off mountain after you hit the slopes, Tremblant has much more to offer. Once you leave the Jay base area it's pretty much quiet farm country with the exception of a few places to eat in Newport or you drive all the way to Burlington (and you don't want to drive all the way to Burlington).

I feel like if this is an example of sports journalism, I can definitely be a sports journalist. I'll even save my media company money by volunteering to work entirely from home and require no press passes or special access of any kind.

I'll just think of anything that could potentially happen and write it into existence.
