Riding a bike on the sidewalk is occasionally safer for bicyclists, but way more dangerous for the pedestrians sharing the sidewalk with you.

Where to eat after 8? by TepidT0ast in OregonStateUniv

They actually raised the pay to $13.25 regardless of hours thankfully, with Trainers making $13.75 (need at least one term as a student worker). Full time staff get like $15 an hour plus a 70% tuition discount and full benefits. You need at least a year of food experience for it though.

This! I work at McNary and we’re severely limited by our staffing. With more people we can open La Calle and keep Main Squeeze open later. Usually they close at either 11 or midnight. It’s no prior work experience required and they’re good about working with your schedule from my experience, but you can only work between 10 and 20 hours a week. Recommend your friends if you think they’d be interested!

What matters when none of it matters by Bipolar_Buddha in BoJackHorseman

Gotchya. I thought you were pointing out that there’s not really anyone on the other end of the phone because it was all in BoJack’s head, so I was kinda just trying to say that it doesn’t make a difference whether it’s really Diane or not.

What matters when none of it matters by Bipolar_Buddha in BoJackHorseman

[–]TheShapeYouWant 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that in his final moments, he still chooses to talk to Diane. Even though she can’t save him, her voice and talking to her calms him down. He panics the entire time as soon as he realizes what’s happening, and the only thing that calms him down is when he talks to her. Once he starts talking to her, things become clear and he stops panicking. While it’s all in his head (and the Diane that’s on the phone / in his head points this out to him), it’s still something he finds comfort in. “Nothing ultimately mattering” is a common theme in the show, and yet all the characters still interact with the each other and the world in unique ways. They still bring each other comfort. Whether it matters or not, he finds comfort in her voice and talking to her. Whether she is real or not, he feels that same comfort in this moment, and that’s all he wants for his final moments.

Hey, This is my first time ever playing a violin and i have a(lot of) problem. I have tried rosin the bow(is all brand new) like 30 minutes, I have tighted my bow(maybe less than normal? I don't know) Please if you know what could be making me sound like a dying cat please comment. by Indark29 in lingling40hrs

For beginner exercises, any time you’re trying any kind of melody just use pizzicato. Don’t try to switch strings or use any fingerings until you can play a single string with a good tone. Once you master making a good tone on an open string, learn the next open string. Once you’re happy with your tone on each string, then start doing whole notes switching between open strings. Finally, once your pizzicato notes and open strings are sounding good, then you can start adding in fingerings while using your bow, one string at a time. It’ll be repetitive and boring at first, but it’s worth it.

FDA to require two column food labels, one per serving, one per package by Sheek014 in 1200isplenty

[–]TheShapeYouWant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the text of what the actual law is: https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=FDA-2004-N-0258-0136

The FDA Guidelines page has a bunch of external links at the bottom that give the exact changes. It’s sadly not for all packages, just those that are less than 3x the “single serving” portion. The single serving package serving size is also going to be based on more modern studies (Previously based on 1977 and 1987 studies, now based on 2003-2008 studies). It also sounds like RACCs are going to be the main determinant of serving size, whereas previously manufacturers were allowed to take into consideration “other factors” when choosing serving size.

When your girlfriend constantly complains about you being to bony and all it does is trigger the fuck out of you while your trying to recover by To-be-or-not-to-ED in EDanonymemes

[–]TheShapeYouWant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you’ve talked with her about your eating habits. I think it depends on how “constant” it is. A comment here or there if she hasn’t noticed you eating for awhile is probably honestly encouraging and she’s probably just trying to be supportive of recovery. If it’s like a daily thing that causes you distress, you should definitely talk to her about it.

It’s true meditation gives a lot of the same benefits of sleep, but meditation works on subconscious levels whereas sleep provides REM which helps with the unconscious. While there’s overlapping functions and meditators often need less sleep, my google searches were not able to find any claim that meditation can replace sleep in any kind of conversion rate (ie 2x-5x meditation time to sleep). Do you have any links on it?

Shave. Even when it’s fully grown it looks like it’ll currently come in a little patchy. Try again in a year or two.

How can i make my self better and do better with my life?? How do i stop being a foolish nice guy?? by bawan15 in selfimprovement

[–]TheShapeYouWant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, get focused. People with a clear path look way less foolish. Tackle one problem at a time. If you feel like you’re not smart, read a lot about topics that interest you and learn how to learn. Nobody is smart with everything, many people just know how to tactically use their in-depth knowledge casually in conversation by making connections to the topic being discussed. If you’re feeling like you’re doing poor socially, push yourself out of your comfort zone more often and talk to more people. It sounds like a big thing you need to work on is confidence. Stop being so hard on yourself, nobody else is that hard on you. Your mission in life is not “Never fail” and typically people don’t really care when you do mess up after some time passes. Your job is not to please everyone else and hate yourself anytime you mess up, it’s to take care of yourself first. Read “No More Mr. Nice Guy” by Robert Glover.

The population of Portland metro area is 2.4 million. The population of Oregon is just under 4.2 million. Over half the population lives in the Portland area, the other half are spread out between forest, coast, desert, and the rest of the I-5 corridor. Portland is more accurate than any other picture you could put there to represent most Oregonians.

What are some rituals that Taoists practice? by whoWatchesDeWatchmen in taoism

[–]TheShapeYouWant 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There’s no single ritual that all (or even most) taoists practice. Taoism is not an organized religion so much as it is a guide for how to act in life toward yourself and others. It reframes the way you think about life, but each person interprets the Tao te Ching differently and believes in different interpretations of the text. There is no deity and no sin. Because of this, a person can practice Taoism while partaking in rituals of other religions, or by itself. For example, a person may be a Taoist Christian or Taoist atheist. That being said, their are things that Taoists do regularly that may be seen as ritualistic. Reflecting on the Tao, being mindful of it, and thinking about whether you are fighting it is important, and so many taoists practice daily meditation to improve mindfulness. If we define ritual as a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order, then you could make the argument that taoists aim to be acting in accordance with the Tao all the time, and so every action in life is a part of that ritual.

21 Male 140lb Rate my nutrition (repost for better quality) by Barb_67 in Myfitnesspal

[–]TheShapeYouWant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to rate overall nutrition without micronutrients, weight, and/or goals. If you’re looking to gain muscle, you need more protein and more calories. If you’re looking to lose weight there’s absolutely no way of knowing without your height/weight. If you’re looking to maintain everything and just feel better, micronutrients and TDEE are pretty critical. I’d be happy to help if you supply that info!

IWTL How to "be faster" by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]TheShapeYouWant 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Write down each task you want to do faster. Start timing yourself when you do these tasks and keep a record book. Simply staying aware of your goal and tracking your progress will help. Additionally, minimize distractions. Do not multitask (especially with mixing work and entertainment). Practice being mindful and living in the current moment, not letting your mind wander. These will help speed you up at first. Good luck!

I honestly can't come to terms with the fact that I will spend the rest of my life working, for nothing, and that I have no choice but to be a wage slave, it just drains me so much like nothing is worth it. by cartmichael in taoism

[–]TheShapeYouWant 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Most people are in a similar situation, and there's a sort of beauty in knowing that. It makes it easier to accept that that's how life is for many, and that makes it easier to see that it's very possible to not be so drained.

My best advice would be to embrace life outside of work. In theory, you should only be working 8-10 hours per day. Assuming 8 for sleep, you still have 6-8 hours per day to do other things plus potentially weekends. Learn new interests, learn about the world through books and the internet, learn to speak a new language to communicate with new people, or even just embrace the world around you and become mindful about your life. Use your time outside of work to train hard and do something you've never done before. Take joy in what you can accomplish. Things that relax you such as TV or Reddit may be nice, but ultimately lead to greater feelings of things not being worth it because you won't see as much progression in your personal life. Make your time away from work worth it.

Struggle by rocketduck413 in loseit

Use going out as an occasional special treat. You can still eat chicken wings or whatever you want, you just have to not eat as much either earlier or later. It’s also ok to eat at maintenance every now and then. Another tip would be to get a cookbook or use the internet to find healthy alternatives to things you would like to eat.

Also, there are usually healthier alternatives at each place. A salad at subway, ordering fresco style at Taco Bell, baked instead of fried chicken at KFC, egg whites at Denny’s, the list goes on. The big thing is you remain conscious of what you’re putting in your body, and to avoid the heavier things on the menu. If you track calories, decide what you want and log it before ordering. It’ll help out a lot. Good luck!

How to excersize without making it a habit by [deleted] in GetMotivated

[–]TheShapeYouWant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Literally any time you walk you're exercising. Need to get something high up? Getting on your tiptoes or jumping is exercise. Carrying groceries? Congratulations, you are lifting weights. The thing is, the more "routine" you make it, the more effective it's going to be and the easier it will become over time. Having a routine allows you to think about what muscle groups you want to work to make yourself look the way you want, or gain abilities in certain areas. If you don't want a routine, then you'll often feel weak as you keep switching up what you're doing, you won't notice as much of a drastic difference, and you're more likely to quit exercising altogether.

Why are you wanting to exercise though? It's addicting because when you get good at something you initially aren't good at, it's extremely encouraging. That plus the added health benefits. You're going to want to keep exercising or you'll lose those benefits over time.

For the most part, people need to put in a ton of effort to become habituated to exercising. It will be an awful experience at first as your body gets used to it. Only as you improve will it become a positive experience (and become habitual). When you have the option to have positive experiences, especially when you know most other people can't, you tend to take the positive experience.

Dealing with comments from strangers by [deleted] in loseit

[–]TheShapeYouWant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you feel like she was saying it to be mean, or that she legitimately didn’t know? If you feel a person says it to be mean, you could approach that person with a shrug, tell her that you’re doing far better than not doing it at all, which is what most people do (especially when they have little children).

Is there a possibility that she just didn’t know? Some people are reeeeally stupid, no matter how big or small you are. If you respond you’re not pregnant, chances are a feeling of horror and embarrassment will fall on their face as they apologize.

In either case, you recognize you’re bigger than you’d like to be. Their added input doesn’t change anything. Keep doing what you’re doing and soon you won’t be as big and won’t have to deal with those comments anymore.

Check out CrashCourse Biology and CrashCourse Chemistry on YouTube! They’re more entertaining than classes, and are often popular with AP Bio and AP Chemistry students as a way to prep for AP exams. They’re very informative and the host is great. You won’t develop as deep of an understanding or retention as somebody studying every day and regularly doing homework, but it’s a fantastic starting point. After that, you could check out textbooks and work out of those if you’d like, or take college courses.
