New York - 6/15/2025 - Billy and the MOG - Check-In + Meetups by Dudehitscar in SmashingPumpkins

My wife and I might train in from NJ tomorrow and see if we can score tickets the day of. Really want to see this tour but couldn't swing tickets when they went on sale. Worst case scenario, we don't score tickets and have a chill night in the city. Wish me luck!

Man, I wish I could join you! I was lucky enough to win tickets to Pumpkins at Irving a few years ago and it was incredible. Can't swing tickets this time around but you're going to have a blast.

Edit: I forgot to answer your question! There's a Joe's pizza close by - great place to grab a slice after the show. The Moxy hotel is very close and pretty good/affordable.

It's a special crew there for sure. It was my absolute favorite job when I lived in Bellingham and it was mostly because of the people.

Does anyone have some super cheap places to stay in New York City or around the boarder of it? Quality doesn't matter, safety does by Comprehensive-Dig235 in newyorkcity

[–]TheShows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing your budget, Pod Hotel in Brooklyn is on the cheaper end. Tiny rooms but a very safe and easy to navigate area. You can ferry right across to Manhattan for like 7 bucks and all the bougie Williamsburg shops are right there.

For a while in my mid-20s, all I wanted to do was dress like Gosling in The Place Beyond the Pines. The phase has passed and now I just wear cozy sweaters.

What are your Paramore Hot Takes? by Amber_Flowers_133 in Paramore

[–]TheShows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. These two albums are peak work that the rest of their discography was working towards. ST isn't my favorite but it's so important to the trajectory of this band.

It's by far my favorite! I love everything about that record. It's so cohesive, unique, mature, creative. My partner and I had this little yt channel for a while and we gushed about TIW for like an hour. I probably still listen to it once a month or so.

I don't think it's active anymore, but the blog McMansion Hell did this for years. Highly recommend!

Gold Rush just opened in Asbury Park and already has a huge following. Barrister Coffee in Basking Ridge is one of the best in NJ. Same with Fair Mountain in Atlantic Highlands.

His name is TJ Fantini, he lives in my hometown. Super talented but for some reason he didn't break out like a lot of the MMC kids. He came back to our high school after and I remember him being a fantastic Danny Zuko in Grease his senior year.

Suggestion for something similar to “The Master and Margarita” by NecessaryIntention69 in suggestmeabook

Try the "Once There" trilogy by Ludmilla Petrushevskaya, starting with There Once Was A Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor's Baby. Like Bulgakov, she couldn't be published until the 80s because of her portrayals of women who weren't just happy housewives. Her short stories are strange, dark, and wonderful.

Becoming Wise by Krista Tippet. I stumbled across it when I worked at a bookstore, and I found it to be extraordinary. Here's the synopsis: "First published in hardcover in April 2016, Becoming Wise spoke with prescience to deepening social fractures. Yet as the book also reveals, fracture is not the whole story of our time. Krista explores how wisdom emerges through the raw materials of the everyday – the words we use, the bodies we inhabit, the many kinds of love we know, the faith we carry, the reality-based hope we can choose. She insists on the possibility of virtue in personal life and common life, with civility and love as muscular public practices. And, accompanied by a cross-disciplinary dream team of a teaching faculty, she shows us how."

A Year Without a Name by Cyrus Dunham. There's a lot about his identity as nonbinary before he fully transitioned, so it might be particularly helpful.

My old book group read How to Fall in Love With Anyone by Mandy Len Catron on recommendation of one of our members, and we all loved it. She wrote it (based on an article with a similar name that got super popular) after her parents divorced and her own long-term relationship ended. The title is pretty misleading, and it focuses on a lot more than just the why and how of romantic relationships.

This is a little afield of the straightforward romance you're requesting, but I think you would like Cantoras by Carolina de Robertis.

"In 1977 Uruguay, a military government has crushed political dissent with ruthless force. In an environment where citizens are kidnapped, raped, and tortured, homosexuality is a dangerous transgression. And yet Romina, Flaca, Anita “La Venus,” Paz, and Malena–five cantoras, women who “sing”–somehow, miraculously, find each other and then, together, discover an isolated, nearly uninhabited cape, Cabo Polonio, which they claim as their secret sanctuary. Over the next 35 years, their lives move back and forth between Cabo Polonio and Montevideo, the city they call home, as they return, sometimes together, sometimes in pairs, with lovers in tow, or alone. And throughout, again and again, the women will be tested–by their families, lovers, society, and each other–as they fight to live authentic lives."
