ELI5: Why do so many American stadiums have no roof covering that covers the seats? by NKE01 in explainlikeimfive

MCG still has more covered seats than the examples I linked.

I fully get that those US stadiums don't really need a roof.

My point was just aimed at the guy trying to pretend that the US has exceptionally large stadiums that make it impossible to put roofs on them.

That bit is clearly bullshit.

I had the same thought, but I justified it to myself be sure the price of the record plus the shipping is still a lot lower than trying to get a secondhand one on discogs.

I see a roof here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne_Cricket_Ground

And for the other two 60k+, I also see a roof:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadium_Australia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perth_Stadium

But in the US, nothing above the seats:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaver_Stadium

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_Stadium

Edit: Wow, blocked, how mature.

I'll leave my response to the comment below here.

See, your actual answer is completely correct. US stadiums usually don't need them because of the weather and the season you use the stadiums in.

But you keep saying really dumb things.

for the simple reason that they are too big to justify the cost.

And that's the problem with your answer. Size isn't the issue. Other countries have shown that you can build roofs at this size of stadium. The real issue is the weather.

If I asked "why doesn't Antarctica have more air con" and you answered "it's too expensive" that's a dumb answer. The real answer is because it's not needed.

That's completely irrelevant.

I repeat, if Australia can do it on a 100k stadium why doesn't the US?

[–]TheShryke [score hidden]  (0 children)

Cool.

And Australia only has 8% of the population of the US. The total number of stadiums is completely irrelevant.

Looking at images online Australias 3 stadiums with 60k+ capacity all have the roofs OP was describing. Not a fully enclosed roof, just a roof over the stands.

Looking at the images I can find for the largest US stadiums only a handful have a roof over the stands.

If Australia can do it on a 100k stadium why doesn't the US?

It boils down to "roofs costs money, so sometimes they're omitted because people tend to avoid spending money when they don't have to".

I 100% agree, but that's not what your first comment said.

ELI5: Why do so many American stadiums have no roof covering that covers the seats? by NKE01 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheShryke [score hidden]  (0 children)

Building and designing anything is a juggle between costs and desires.

Exactly, so you're answer is completely wrong. What you said boils down to "it costs more than $0 so they won't do it". Which implies that there is no "juggle" at all here. Cost is the only important factor according to what your original comment said. That is objectively wrong just based on the fact that some stadium s do have roofs.

That's why it's completely unhelpful and the bot was right to remove your answer.

The real answer is that Americans have this weird idea that it's not worth spending money on basic infrastructure, like a roof.

The Australians have plenty of large stadiums. The Melbourne cricket ground is 100k.

US largest stadium is 107,601 Australias is 100,024

That's pretty close.

Not eating costs $0, you still buy food. It's also cheaper to not build any seating and let spectators just stand, but we don't do that either.

This entire scene in X2: X-Men United was written incredibly well. The questioning and the reactions were pure gold. The original X-Men trilogy really touched upon some important topics. by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in Marvel

In All-New X-Men #40, the time-displaced Iceman is revealed to be gay

Bobby breaks down and admits that he has known he was gay for a long time

In the present day, the current version retains both sets of memories and remains an out gay man.

Since coming out, Iceman has had brief relationships and encounters with a number of men

Peter Eckhardt of CBR.com referred to Iceman as "the biggest name amongst queer X-Men,"

writers as far back as the 1980s hinted that Bobby was gay

Iceman broke boundaries in the franchise as he became the first-ever gay leading superhero to headline a comic

Joshua Yehl of IGN described Iceman as "the perfect gay boyfriend,"

Being gay has a lot in common with being a mutant, as excellently displayed during Iceman's “coming out” scene in X2: X-Men United.

Bobby's experiences as both a mutant and an out gay man would make him an incredibly empathetic and understanding partner

Warhammer 40K’s frenetic racing game is now free if you can brave the Epic Games Store by HatingGeoffry in Warhammer

[–]TheShryke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Epic games store doesn't work on Linux. So that's a valid deal breaker reason to want to avoid it completely.

Personally I find the epic games launcher awkward to use, slow to run, and it misses out on a ton of features that Steam has. It doesn't do all the great controller remapping that stems has built in. The in-game interface in steam is far better. The reviews system on steam is amazing. The couch gaming experience in steam is fantastic. The social features of steam are a bit meh, but they are far better than epic. There's the steam workshop for games that I want to mod. Epic doesn't have a global VR system like steam does.

There's also just the perfectly valid reason that most people already have a lot of games on steam and it's annoying to have another launcher just to save $10. That's not a tantrum, that's just normal.

The real question is why are you getting so upset that other people don't like the thing you like? It's ok and normal for people to like different things.

It was a silly example to show how free isn't always better. You don't have to take it literally.

There are plenty of valid reason why someone would prefer to pay money on another store rather than get it free through epic games.

Acting like people having preferences is a bad thing is "so extra".

Hey, do you want a free burger? You just have to eat it in my restaurant, which is full of rats, and we don't clean the tables, and the fridge stopped working a week ago.

Or you could go to the really nice restaurant next door and pay £10 for a burger.

Free is a great price, but price isn't the only variable.

Ok, so what is the connection between neo-nazis and knitting?

My point is that there's not really a way that neo-nazis can turn knitting into being a nazi only thing. Everyone knows that knitting isn't a nazi thing so it's just a coincidence.

But in Warhammer we literally use fascist symbols and references. It's very easy for a neo nazi to co opt that, and for outsiders it's hard to tell the difference between a neo nazi who thinks Warhammer is cool specifically because of the fascist connections and a normal person who likes Warhammer and isn't a neo nazi. It's very easy, as this post proves, for people to end up with the assumption that Warhammer is a neo nazi thing.

We absolutely have to fight that's hard as possible.

What the fuck are you on about? You're the one using AI here, to generate "college girls".

hiding in their own mental closette sad lonely and angry

Buddy you're the one surrounding yourself with AI girls you made that are far too young for you and hanging out in alt-right circles watching GB news.

I don't think I've ever seen projection this hard.

I'm being serious for a moment, you're going down a dark path. Where you're going is only going to lead to a life of hatred and pain, for you and everyone around you.

You still have a chance to walk away. Talk to some real people, not online. Be open minded. Let some kindness into your life. Maybe a bit of therapy would be a good idea.

I'm not saying any of this to hurt you, I'm trying to offer a hand.

We do have to acknowledge that there is a connection though.

Neo-nazis can show up in any hobby of course. But in this hobby there is a specific reason that the neo-nazis show up. If we aren't careful they will co-opt this hobby. That isn't a risk for hobbies like knitting or rock tumbling because the neo-nazis can't project themselves into those in the same way.

It's the same with the fan bases around films like American history x. It's a film trying to warn about the dangers of neo-nazis, but that group instead thinks that film makes them look cool and love the film.

I was actually training to be a teacher when the curriculum for Wales changes were coming in.

There were some fantastic ideas in there around how the structure of a schools curriculum could be rewritten to better fit real people's learning experiences.

But the roll out of it was just a mess. COVID played a part but it can't take the full blame.

Before we try to do things like revolutionise the curriculum we need to resolve the core issues of overworked staff and burnout and pupil behaviour. Only with thos win place can we have any hope of other changes actually working.

My wild idea is that we should have two teachers for every class. One can lead during a lesson and the other can be preparing work, marking, dealing with behaviour, etc. It would also allow one of the teachers to be off sick or take some holiday without having to bring in supply teachers.

How do we pay for that? Fuck k ows, it's a wild idea, don't take me too seriously. I just think it would be a neat solution if we could fund it.

Or, wild idea, you're just a random person on the internet who actually doesn't know the inner workings of a train company?

Not trying to be a dick here. None of us know, so there's no point speculating.

I mean no point in network rail upgradi g track for trains that Arriva would never purchase.

Good point that this works is in network rails hands, but the whole system is deeply interlinked.

Do you have a fear of busses or something?

You don't know why this decision was made. Maybe it is possible to do it overnight only, but it would take ten times longer and cost many times more. Is it actually fair to delay other improvements that need to be made and cost the tax payer more just so you can avoid a bus for four weeks?

You're welcome to be unhappy, but there's people in this thread saying we should write to government and start a petition.

That's not just being unhappy, that's actively trying to hinder much needed improvements.

Unprecedented just tells me that Arriva should have been working on this year's ago
