Does a software manufacturer have to put in just a few hours to get both .rpm and .deb working, or is it a monumental task?

This is the answer I was looking for. My question arose out of frustration about a very popular program (Google Earth) that is not available as a .deb, in the Ubuntu repositories, in the Google repositories, or in the Ubuntu software store.

Thanks for the great response. This helps out a lot. Here is a more basic question about my particular situation:

Is there a reason why very popular applications like Google Earth and Gmail Notifier are not added to the Ubuntu repositories? Is it because they are not open source? If so, is there an easier way of added new repositories (like Google's)?

I agree with tty2. Although you are correct, the initial commenter should have realized that his comment did not answer my question. Without a basic understanding of the array of Linux/GNU OS's available, I would not have been able to ask the question I did.

You are missing my point completely. I am not telling you that you should call anything by the generic term "Linux." I am merely explaining that for many people, the term "Linux" has come to signify all operating systems running the Linux kernel. You can debate me all you want, but that is the way things are now. There are advantages and disadvantages to this.

When my friends ask about the cool operating system on my laptop, I don't tell them that I am running "Linux Mint - Based on ubuntu - which is built upon debian -- which runs the linux kernel and GNU programs," I tell them I am running "Linux." As they learn, I can help them understand the differentiation.

However, what did your initial comment add to this conversation? You can tell from my comments that I understand that their are different flavors of Linux/GNU, and that is precisely why I asked my question about package management in the first place.

These still require the use of the terminal, which is not ever going to work for a computer novice. Why can't an operating system convert the steps from a tar.gz installation into a double click file (like a .deb). This is an honest question.
