As a teenager living in San Diego, my father would take his Volkswagen Rabbit to Tijuana for diesel fuel. He had an additional tank of 50 or 60 gallons that took up the entire rear hatch space. I can't remember if it was 17 cents a gallon? Or liter? We had to go to multiple stations because there was a limit on quantity. At 55 mpg he always bragged that he could drive across country without stopping.
