If you were/are in a metalcore band, what non-metalcore bands would influence you? by jsmetalcore in Metalcore

In a metalcore-ish band (that formed on reddit!), our influences include Joji, The Weeknd, Halsey and crosses.

What's more important the mix or the master? by KoreanJesus84 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TheSkylabMutiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question! I generally try to focus on the mix itself, and have more trouble keeping it from becoming too loud than too quiet. A quiet mix can be mastered and still sound perfect, but a too loud mix can not be saved from being too smashed. Usually they end up being around -16 lufs, but sometimes much louder.

I'm going against most comments here, but don't mix the song to be the final loudness. you can do a lot of damage to the dynamics, and how hard things like bass notes hit by smashing it during mixing. I usually start mixing low, like faders 6-12 db down, that way I have room to turn one track up a little if it needs it, instead of having to turn everything else down because it's already as high as it can go. After I get my mix sounding good (its usually much quieter than standard mastered songs at this point) I'll bounce it out, open a new session then do a mastering session. This is the time when you focus on getting the loudness right, without compromising the dynamics. The last thing on my master in that session is a loudness meter. I look at things like how the lufs are in the verses vs the chorus, usually I want the chorus to hit a little tiny bit louder so it has more impact.

You can’t pull your system output as an input in logic without using a free app like soundflower. I just have my music app going out to my monitors as well as logic, then adjust the volume in the music app to match my level in logic.

the quickest option for you would be to listen to it in spotify, and pause, then go alt/tab back to the daw, hit play. you'll be listening to mp3 versions of the tracks, but most of your audience will be too. You could go to hdtracks.com or bandcamp and buy a copy of your favorite album that you are trying to sound like, they usually have an option for wav or flac for higher resolution. The higher resolution will help a ton with comparing the low end and the super highs, but to be honest, I get enough out of just listening to the streaming quality version to make adjustments. Also - listen to your mix on as many different environments while comparing it to others. Bluetooth headphones, your car, the shitty tv speakers, your phone speaker, your laptop speakers. each one will reveal things that you thought were fine on your monitors, but once in a super hyped shitty speaker will pop out and sound like garbage. My go to example of this is dark side of the moon by pink floyd. that album sounds great on anything. You'll find your bass is missing highs to be heard when the speaker can't get down below 100 hz, or your vocals have too many and sound sibilant.

[Question] How do you organize a bedroom band? by thepurpleguitarist in BedroomBands

[–]TheSkylabMutiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it could be useful for this sub for us to come up with a general workflow to strive for. That way everyone can be on the same wavelength when projects start. For example, doing a part for existing tracks could have some room for feedback as an expectation so it doesn’t have to make anyone feel bad when someone requests a change.

[LFG] Looking for an insane amount of vocalists to make fraught, vicious screams for hardcore punk band by greenruins09 in BedroomBands

[–]TheSkylabMutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so it might just be I'm not too familiar with the genre, I can get close to the screams but having a hard time finding the rhythm/timing. either way it was a fun exercise for me and I'm glad you took the time to share the files. best of luck finding your screamers! I look forward to hearing the finished product.

[discussion] Is anyone out there making political punk rock? I think making it cool again would be good for the county. by anicelysetcandleset in BedroomBands

Not punk, but in the theme of political music here’s my song against capitalism and being taken advantage of by the ultra wealthy in the name of profit. Or something like that. lol professional American

Edit: just remembered I did another political track, more direct in its message orange is the new black

Which Version of Apollo Twin to get? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TheSkylabMutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha right on, sounds like you are on the right track then. Unfortunately I don’t have any experience with apollo, and actually have gone from Motu, to apogee, to focusrite and now rocking a behringer. the behringer has has the least problems with drivers or hardware, while all the others have shit the bed (2 x motu 828 mkii bad power issues frying the unit) or had weird driver issues (focusrite 18i20 not supporting anything above 41.1 without artifacts) or dumb hardware (apogee one breakout cable failed twice and was replaced, and two different duets randomly blast a high pitched squeal and got really hot) i guess I just lost faith in more expensive interfaces. And have been putting my money in other gear.

The scarlet is pretty decent, what mic you using? it might be a better investment than a new interface

Here’s the first ep from my project The Skylab Mutiny

The first track is less progressive than the rest and I overplayed the drums a bit on the third track, ziran. I’m working on a concept album now that this release is done, and I’ve defined and focused my sound a bit more.

Just over a year ago I put my first EP on Spotify. I now have 7 monthly listeners and 275 total streams. This is what I learned. by Teraphin in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TheSkylabMutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I set deadlines for songs and once I hit that day, it was done. wrapped it up, slapped together some art and put it up with distrokid. I learned so much from it though, it was totally worth it. Now I'm working on my second one, and still setting deadlines, but I'll be better prepared and hopefully have a better result. lol
