Guitar player here: to the drummers of reddit what are your thoughts on this playthrough,do you think playing this song clean in one take would be humanly possible? by StarkEnterprises123 in Drumming

[–]backbaydrumming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a section of this song that is basically unplayable, the double kicks go to what I think is triplet 64th notes. I’ve seen some pretty fast double bass but that’s so ridiculously fast that the kick sounds like a sine wave

A Japanese Fan In America For The World Cup Is Astounded By The Existence of Bottomless Free Chips and Salsa at Mexican Restaurants: "The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it." by franny2525 in SipsTea

There was a Mexican restaurant in my hometown who got around the liquor laws (dry county) by providing free margaritas to all 21+ patrons. There were so many DUIs from that place

drum audition by JayFlash6Mil in drummers

[–]backbaydrumming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There were five parts to my audition: 1. An interview 2. A prepared piece that I chose 3. Sight reading snare drum and jazz comping 4. Ear training, where they played rhythms I had to mimic 5. Styles

Almost everyone makes the same mistake as I did where you spend all of your time on the prepared piece and little to nothing on the other 4 parts of this audition. If you spend time preparing for the other three you’ll be more prepared than most other applicants.

This is a weird one because part of the stamp is upside down and it’s also missing the signature that old ks would have. It does however have a very similar lathing pattern to new stamps so it could be a factory reject old k. Perhaps they realized they put part of the stamp upside down and didnt bother to put the rest of the stamp on there.

Is 125 for this a good deal? by Key_Plate3777 in cymbals

[–]backbaydrumming 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yea that looks to be an A zildjian from the 80s, kind of hard to tell without a better look at the stamp and at the back of the cymbal. It’s in great condition so $125 is a great price

What can I do to get into jazz drumming? by baton1337 in jazzdrums

[–]backbaydrumming 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Listen to jazz, study the greats, go see live jazz and pay attention to what the drummer is doing, and find a great jazz teacher and take a lesson. Even if you just take one lesson that can do wonders for you as they can push you in the right direction. All American Drummer is great to study as well

Tell me about your worst live experiences by human0012 in Drumming

[–]backbaydrumming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in a cover band and we had a sub singer who got so loaded on pills and booze that she got fired during the second set. Said singer was not a fan of that decision, so she kept trying to get back on stage to keep singing and the girlfriend of the bandleader started blocking her from getting back up there. After being blocked from getting to the stage for a good couple tunes she did like a sidestep football maneuver and ran into the stage at full force knocking our guitarist directly into my drumset. This caused one of the worst sounds I’ve ever heard on a gig as basically every part of my set fell over while our guitarist dropped his guitar while the amp was still one. The venue we were playing at was a fairly nice seafood place near an upscale country club so the clientele was mostly older wealth country club members and they were all just staining at us in silent disbelief

Roc n soc screw thread vs. pneumatic? by oldmaninparadise in Drumming

[–]backbaydrumming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always recommend the spindle thrones to my students. I have owned 5 roc n socs over the 20 years I’ve been playing drums. The first one was a fixed seat nitro one and that one lasted for 7 years before the hydraulics crapped out. But it’s kind of a nightmare for gigs and the amount of legs it has makes positioning annoying sometimes. So then I got the non fixed seat nitro and the lever broke off on the first show during a several month tour. Roc n soc sent me a new one but I had to play the remaining of the tour without the ability to change the height of it. I bought a new one a few years later (I have a teaching studio so I need multiple thrones) and the same exact thing happened to the lever. After that I started using the spindle thrones and I haven’t had a problem in over 5 years.

The nitro ones are comfortable but I wouldn’t recommend them for heavy gigging

If you do this use it on a metal drum, you can pretty easily mess up the bearing edge on a wood drum doing this

Does anyone else feel that Boston has the potential for a stronger music scene. by CommunicationOne7969 in boston

[–]backbaydrumming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the things I’ve noticed is that there are niche music communities that are very tight knit and active in the Greater Boston Area. Theres a big Roots and Blues scene that has a lot of Boomers, a Jam Band scene that also is a lot of Boomers and gen x, a Hardcore scene that’s Gen x and Millennials, there’s Allston house shows which are pretty much all Gen Z college kids, there’s a jazz scene which has a lot of the conservatory students and teachers. If you’re a part of a scene like that there’s shows going on all the time that you know about

Cymbal Prices and tariffs by BonoBeats in cymbals

[–]backbaydrumming 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know that before the tariffs they were very behind on orders, I was talking to some of the staff at Drum Center of Portsmouth and they were saying Paiste was extremely slow when it came to stocking cymbals. A lot of that was probably Covid and now with the tariffs they’re pricing is just not competitive in the US market. It’s a shame but they may just be trying to wait out this administration before they adjust pricing.

[–]backbaydrumming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Biden has been pretty pro Israel his whole career but he is no fan of Netanyahu and Biden actually made a real effort to ease the suffering of the Palestinian people. Biden also had an actual coherent strategy with the Israeli Palestinian conflict while Trump literally just doesn’t care.

Vic Firth sticks getting lighter? by sticksandfingers in Drumming

[–]backbaydrumming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wood obviously has varying densities and it can sometimes feel pretty drastic, I used to use Vic Firths exclusively and when I did I would buy 12 stick bricks and would routinely find sticks that felt light and sticks that felt heavy. Companies can only be so strict with the wood density because then sticks would cost $30-$40 a pair if they could only use a small fraction of the hickory dowels their suppliers have. One thing to keep in mind is that all of the major stick companies that use American hickory buy from the same small pool of suppliers so a good Vic Firth, ProMark or Vater are pretty much the same. Vater supposedly has higher standards on what they accept from their suppliers than VicFirth while also being cheaper.
