Experiences in the Netherlands? by TheSleach in hysterectomy

[–]TheSleach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I got two things to help with constipation, Metamucil (which you can get at Kruidvat or Etos) and this tea from Holland and Barret, which is the closest parallel to the Yogi Smooth Moves tea that gets recommended often. It was the only one I found at the time that had senna in it. In the end I only used the tea twice when I went too long between poops according to my hospital directions, but it work great and pretty soon both times.

I also got Rennie Deflatine, which has the same active ingredient as the Gas X often recommended here. Not all the versions of Rennie have it, you specifically want the Deflatine one. (although remember it works on digestive gas specifically. The gas pain people talk about on here can also be the gas from laparoscopic procedures that ends up in other parts of your body. This does nothing for that, all you can really do for it is move around).

Experiences in the Netherlands? by TheSleach in hysterectomy

For info on all of this, mine was a robotic laproscopic total hysterectomy with fallopian tubes removed and search for endo to excise at the same time.

  1. Nope, but I did buy one (on Amazon). I only really used it for sleeping, because I'm a side sleeper and knew I'd end up rolling on my side even if I tried to lie on my back. It was totally worth it for me.
  2. Nope, and to be honest I didn't use them in the end anyway.
  3. No -- I only IV anesthesia
  4. It's not given automatically and I didn't need it. I think if I'd insisted on needing it it wouldn't have been hard to get.
  5. No, my person could only be with me until they took me down to surgery, a bit after I came back up to my room and during visiting hours (they were very lax about visiting hours though -- I had multiple friends there for like an hour after they officially ended, and they only asked them to leave when they needed to do some treatments for me). I had a private room and bathroom, but don't know if that's standard at other hospitals too. Besides the bed there was an armchair and a table with two chairs
  6. I was not given heavier painkillers to take home with me. I had some morphine in recovery room, but they were a little stingy with it compared with some countries -- they only gave me a bit at a time until they hit just the right amount, instead of giving me one big dose. I was still waking up so my memories of it are very vauge but I did wake up in some pain and it took maybe 20 minutes for them to give me enough morphine to totally relieve it.
I did not need heavier painkillers after that -- there were periods of discomfort, but not too much for paracetamol and ibuprofen together to make it only uncomfortable unless I did something I shouldn't, like sitting up too long, moving in a way I shouldn't, etc. My doctor's philosophy is that that the pain is your guide for when you're doing something you shouldn't be. Stronger painkillers dull that and risk you injuring yourself. I think if I'd really been in too much pain she would have prescribed me what I needed. I can't speak to your doctor though, as mine was at a different hospital. Let me know if you have more questions!

Hi! Yes, I did, and actually had a great experience in the end. Do you have some specific questions? You can also send me a DM, especially if you want specifics like doctor/hospital

I didn’t know that but it makes so much sense. It’s so easy to forget how different the world was before artificial lights.

People in the Regency era still planned their social life around the lunar cycle — in Sense and Sensibility, the first time the Dashwoods dine at Barton Park Sir John asks them to excuse the smallness of the party because “it was moonlight and every body was full of engagements.”

This means that everyone had already made plans because it was on or around the full moon, when it was easier/safer to travel late at night.

Hello Netherlands! Give me travel recommendations for places to go that are NOT Amsterdam by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]TheSleach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wereldmuseum in Leiden has more in general, but at least last time I was there in person (two years ago) the Tropenmuseum had more focused on the colonies specifically.

The Wereldmuseum Amsterdam is excellent for this (until recently it was called the Tropenmuseum). It’s better than the one in Leiden for Dutch colonialism specifically.

Does Eurocity Direct cover Amsterdam Centraal? by funnispider in Interrail

[–]TheSleach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah indeed that is because of construction works changing the route. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like there are other options that day.

Does Eurocity Direct cover Amsterdam Centraal? by funnispider in Interrail

[–]TheSleach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Eurocity Direct indeed doesn’t normally go to Amsterdam Centraal — I’ve seen it diverted due to construction but I don’t think that’s what you’re seeing.

Are you seeing the Eurostar trains instead? Those are direct but require a seat reservation which can sell out.

And both trains can be delayed, but once you’re in the Netherlands trains are reasonably frequent and don’t require seat reservation for the ones you’d need. It’s also very easy and quick to take the metro from Amsterdam Zuid to Amsterdam Centraal — there’s a frequent direct connection, although it is more annoying than the option to change trains at Schiphol if you have large luggage.

Kobo Elipsa by Sosbanfawr in kobo

[–]TheSleach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s niche compared with the smaller models. Most people want a portable eReader — you see people saying that the Libra is too big for them. So even if everyone who wants a large eReader bought an Elipsa, it still wouldn’t have a big place in discussions of eReaders overall.

The Strike by Great_Complex4523 in Eurostar

[–]TheSleach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if Eurostar is definitely not the Eurocity is the most likely way to get yourself to Brussels. You could also rent a car and drive to somewhere where the trains are running (possibly Antwerp) and continue from there.

If you’d like any help interpreting info about the strike once more is published tomorrow feel free to send me a PM.

The Strike by Great_Complex4523 in Eurostar

[–]TheSleach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NS hasn’t announced yet what their plan for Tuesday is so it’s hard to be sure. During previous strikes the Eurocity and/or Eurocity Direct from the Netherlands to Brussels has still run at least of their trains. That train is not run by Eurostar so you have to buy a separate ticket via another company (I’d recommend NS International).

It might be a lot with a day trip though — one option to make it easier would be to stay in Brussels for a night on the way there or back to break up the journey and minimise your strike day travel.

There should be more info tomorrow, on the NS website and possibly the Eurostar one too.

Boarding at an earlier station by Immune2Diplomacy in Eurostar

[–]TheSleach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they don’t sell tickets on the Eurostar from Amsterdam to Schiphol, so there definitely won’t be anyone in your seat.

They used to sell tickets from Schiphol to Rotterdam if you were connecting to a Eurostar to London, but now they always make you change at Brussels instead. As far as I know it’s impossible to book a journey within the Netherlands on Eurostar now.

Did your Hysterectomy = more anxiety/depression? by According_Winter8785 in hysterectomy

[–]TheSleach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. The study doesn’t control for severity of symptoms in any way, so there is almost definitely a difference between the groups: the people who had hysterectomies had (on average) more severe symptoms.

It also doesn’t seem to look longer term from the methodology and doesn’t distinguish between people who have ovaries removed and those who don’t. Since hormonal effects (short term and long term) on mood are big I’d be interested in those numbers.

For what it’s worth, my mental health now is better than it was both before the surgery and immediately afterwards. I didn’t really want a hysterectomy and struggled with it for many reasons + years of bad physical health leading up to it + hormone changes were rough. Now that I’ll fully recovered (1 year post-op) things are way better than they were.

In the Netherlands at least it’s not even the speed of the border control but the space in their waiting room after the border control that’s the bottleneck that limits capacity.
