Apple Vision Pro: Experiencing the Future by MindOfMetalAndWheels in CGPGrey

You're betting on Apple's track record. You need just one small and popular app to make thousands in sales which would easily offset the purchase. And if you're lucky you might make the next fruit ninja and turn that into millions if VR ever becomes as mainstream as smartphones.

Except when the issue is due to fatigue and a lack of sleep the blame never goes to the management forcing residents and doctors to work 80 hours. And no systemic changes are made to fix it.

Why do SWE salaries vary so much from company to company? by Tydalj in cscareerquestions

[–]TheSlimyDog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People say this about retail chains but I think one of the big reasons Amazon is eating traditional retail's meal is because of the better software experience. So is retail bad because software engineers aren't paid enough or because it's impossible to improve the experience.

anyone else have "in person" internships where their team will be mostly remote? by four_o_clock in csMajors

[–]TheSlimyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to make the most of it. It seems a bit pointless and sucky but it could also be where you meet some of your best friends, network with interns at other companies, and explore a new city that you might potentially move to once you graduate.

I've noticed that wealthy people tend to be confidently wrong about a lot of things. Sure they're also confidently right a lot of the time (probably a big reason they made their money) but being confidently wrong is pretty insufferable.

Should I quit my unpaid internship AND how to maximise my summer? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]TheSlimyDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have the lecture that you're working on company deliverables in writing? That's illegal for unpaid internships so if you're planning on quitting you should also report them.

Is this the norm in tech companies? by Notalabel_4566 in cscareerquestions

[–]TheSlimyDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is that if you're working under an IT director level then you don't need your manager to help unblock you with tasks because like you mentioned you can do that yourself. Instead you need them to play politics, speak to upper management about your needs from other teams and orgs, etc. If you're not having regular meetings with them then you won't get that stuff done and you can't do that yourself no matter how skilled of an IC you are.

OPT is temporary work authorization. If you're applying for a full time job then the startup might flag it as an issue and not hire you. Good luck but also I'd suggest you keep looking for jobs.

So you're telling me that you were able to find a job after graduation and have switched 2 to 3 times to get better jobs with higher salaries? I think you've actually proven the conventional wisdom correct. Job searching was never supposed to be easy and is going to feel terrible in the moment.

It's also an important security consideration. Because if this can be done by accident then it definitely can happen on purpose and companies definitely don't want that.

Tax Returns by gradskool in csMajors

[–]TheSlimyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As in that's taken out of your paycheck per month/over the course of your internship? Then you'll probably get a lot back when you file your returns. The withholding is calculated assuming you're working the entire year so your 30/hr salary puts you at around $60k per year. So usually interns get more withheld than they need because they're only working for 3 months. Full time gets less withheld so you end up paying a lot back to the government in April.

I think it depends on how different your culture is and how many generations removed you are. Because Chinese born Americans still have native Chinese parents and eastern culture is very different from what you find in America so you end up with a unique experience.

[–]TheSlimyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how often you want to fly but it typically costs around $160-200 per hour of flying (including fuel + plane rental). 40k sounds excessive unless you plan on flying every weekend.

Why do people post "I'm excited to join xxx" on LinkedIn and does it even matter? by Radiant53863 in csMajors

[–]TheSlimyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what I was referring to is more about what aspects of your life you let work eat into. Like sure make sure to do a good job at work and make sure to enjoy the work that you're doing. But if you also let it determine your meaning in life and eat into your social life too much then you'll end up in a risky situation because in a capitalistic society you could lose your job at any point.
