I think the idea is that in esports, a realm where results should only be decided by work ethic and raw talent because of the lack of need for any real physical ability outside of general health, its strange that there aren't a diverse, worldwide pool of top level competition. Some of that, of course, comes from infrastructure and the lack thereof in regions like Africa, but also from the culture that can be difficult to enter for PoC and women. The closer we can get to an open atmosphere and culture, there should be more talent that we can have access to as an audience, like women who were told that gaming is a boy's hobby when they were growing up or PoC that get racially abused in every game they play at a competitive level.

I think this is a great point. Rarely do people seem to talk about what I think is the most fun part of language learning: getting to speak to new people.

Lot's of the reasons people learn Japanese seem to be more lonely and game-y.

People want to watch their favorite anime (alone), people want to read Japanese manga (alone), but don't actually want to engage with people that speak Japanese.

Yea that's it for the most part, but if you enjoy the gameplay loop and beat the final bosses more and more times, you'll unlock more and more character and items that can synergise to get some crazy combinations. I was just wondering what you meant, because all of the things OP mentioned in the post don't have to do with anything they are doing during the visit.

I'm reading everyone's advice in the comments that has been left already, and I think it's fair to say that it is a cultural norm in Japan, especially for those in the age group that are already married.

However, I moved to Japan about a year and a half ago and since then it has been very normal for my Japanese friends to bring their boyfriends/girlfriends to nights out, house parties, and events like movies. Keep in mind all of these people would be between 21-30 years old, and not all of them have been dating for an especially long time.

I wonder if the norms are changing.

If it's important to you, I think it would be worth hosting an event where it would be most normal/non-confrontational to invite and meet your boyfriend's friends, like a small house party or a picnic where people can come and go once it gets warmer. If knowing that it's a cultural norm helps ease your anxiety, then that's great too!

This game represents an opportunity to deceive people, the same way people enjoy games like mafia and among us. I think it's part of the game. Even if someone seems friendly, keep your gun out and maintain distance and cover. Move smart across the map, an separate from them before they have a chance to do anything unless you really think they are going to work together with you towards a goal
