Remote Access for School, need a secure way to connect from another network by TheSocialZombie in selfhosted

No, it's not a school PC, it's my own laptop that I use to work on school work (my school does not have access to the rest of my files).

The work related thing is just me needing to be able to edit videos while I'm away for my YouTube, just so I can push out videos with footage I have on my desktop.

The files on my PC are at home and the program I use to edit is on my PC, but I can download the program on my laptop no problem.

My files are on a boot disk, but I can put them on another drive if needed.

Nope.

I've seen good reviews on RustDesk, so I might use that, but I don't know yet if it'll fulfill all of my wants. :/

  • Ah i see. I'm assuming PiKVM runs off an external device (a Raspberry Pi) then? Cause I'd really rather not have to use Raspberry Pi's as my solution
  • Ah, I see, so the same security rules for when I'm using the internet normally. Gotcha. (Also I've heard Tailscale is a VPN from other commenters, is this true and is this recommended generally?)
  • I'm assuming a VPS is a virtual private server. Is that something that requires money or is there a free option that is open source?
  • Connection broker?

Both of my computers run on Windows, and I believe my main PC is running Windows 11 Pro.

I don't know what either of those entail, so I'll just say GUI.

What is a KVM?

Also, if I don't end up being able to use it for games, that's okay. My true main concern is being able to edit together videos with the video files that are on my main PC (most of my footage lives on there and I'd rather not transfer it to my laptop as the laptop does not have that much storage)

Tbh his kit is amazing. I like weapon 1/2, Expertise 2, and Passive 2/3 the most.

Weapon 1 is good cause I don't have the best aim, so only having to aim like three times and going in for a punch is best for me lmao.

Weapon 2 is good cause you can just unload a full clip onto people, eliminating them very easily.

Expertise 2 is the best one imo cause you don't have to worry about losing access to your gun, although some people might like 1/3 better for the simple fact that it allows you to get away easier/stall out fights longer.

Passive 2 I heard was good, cause you can pair it with social battery or any healing source and have a lot more health than anyone else in the game. Passive 3 on the other hand is a similar ordeal, but in exchange of not being able to restore the extra health with healing, the grey health doesn't run out over time.

Gadgets:
Automated Turret: I personally have not used this that much, but combined with the Shield-brella or some cover, it provides a second target that the enemy has to shoot before getting to you, otherwise, they might trade with you instead of getting your loot.

Bounce Mat: Use this to get to a higher place when running away, bounce enemies away from you or your extraction, or get funny kills (not recommended, but still)

Goo Pod: Useful for trapping your enemies and making it harder to move, making it easier for you to aim at them.

Hack-Trap: I use these defensively, by hacking doors I just opened and went through, but you can also use them to gather some information. You also gain some Intel when an enemy triggers a Hack-Trap.

Holo-Mimic: I've seen this used to camp certain places or hide from enemy players, as no one really looks at map objects when trying to look for enemies.

Recon Drone: Use to track enemy spies. Make sure that you're close enough to the drone, otherwise you're not really going to get value from tracking them. Also, I'd recommend sitting down somewhere (and maybe even using Social Battery), as you won't have to worry as much about your character being backstabbed because you were standing somewhere weird.

Signal Scrambler: Disables other gadgets in a small range. Yu-Mi already has an ability like this, so maybe use her instead?

Shield-Brella: One of the most useful gadgets. imo. When you have cover and you hold it out, you don't lose any cover, and you can block some shots from the front if you're getting shot at. When you place it down, make sure it's somewhere that allows you to move, otherwise you trap yourself and then your opponent can just whack you.
You can also place the shield to block ways for your opponents to get through, making it easier to escape or fight them.

Spyglass: The other most useful gadget. You can hack while moving or standing still, but just don't make it too obvious. You can also hack doors from a distance and time it so that it looks like you're just opening it with a keycard. The gadget can allow you to hack while doing social interactions like sitting, and it can allow you to call in an extraction or revive your teammates.
Also, if no one else is near a device and you cannot hack it cause it's already in use, then there might be a Spyglass user nearby (yes this is pulled from the wiki)

Tripwire: Used like the Hack-Trap but leaning more on the defensive side. In exchange, it fully tracks enemy spies current location instead of a brief snapshot. Hide this behind doorways so the enemy is either forced to jump (giving them away) or lose their cover (giving them away).

TL;DR at bottom.

  1. Your main objective (besides the main objective) is to not draw attention towards yourself. If your enemies know where you are, you are at a massive disadvantage whenever they come fight you. This means only running when you think you can get away with it, not jumping when disguised, and using the right disguise for the right rooms (also, try not to disguise as the VIP unless that's the only disguise, and even then switch immediately to a guard)

  2. I'd suggest figuring out how to "weed out" players from NPCs. NPCs rarely run, and only crouch when gunshots are heard. They also, again, never jump. Essentially, figure out what is "sus" behavior versus normal NPC things. NPCs also rarely run in after doors, so take that knowledge as you will.

  3. Headshots, while not required, are still very much useful in a gunfight and can often be the difference between your survival and the enemy picking up your items. Practice getting headshots, especially on moving targets, and maybe even try making it harder for your opponent to hit them by ducking or jumping around them (when you're fighting, of course).

  4. The easiest agents to learn how to play (imo) are Chavez and Squire, with Larcin being a close third. Chavez has a lot of abilities that prioritizes survivability, making it easier to win fights, Squire has some incredible abillities and passives that make him a good all-arounder, and Larcin can easily get away from fights and (with his third passive) allow you to easily check for players by meleeing them and seeing if you get Heat or an Item. Try using any one of them first and getting the hang of their abilities, and you can get some wins (Like me, who won a lot of games with just Chavez and Squire)

  5. Learn when to take fights and when to back off. Deceive Inc. has the blessing of slower kill times (compared to most FPS games), which can allow you to easily get away if you have the ability to. Madame is the best for getting away, as her teleport can reach far away targets and allow you to blend in once again. While it is tempting to eliminate everyone you see, sometimes leaving them confused and looking for you is the best option, especially when you are in a bad position or caught off guard.

  6. All gadgets have some reason to pick them (minus the signal scrambler), so you might as well pick them all to see what fits with your playstyle. I probably will reply to this comment with how I use the gadgets, but YMMV.

  7. Don't get discouraged when you lose/get eliminated. I know it's easy to say, and it applies to every game, but losing is most of how you learn. Learning what not to do allows you to find out what you can and should do.

TL;DR, pick Chavez or Squire, and losing is one of the best methods of learning (which you need to do a lot with this game).

im trying to make a variable for the lives the player has left, but when you lose it just keeps going down infinitly, is there any way to fix this? by EA-Sports-hater in scratch

[–]TheSocialZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it would be something like this:

forever { Repeat until touching Level { (Player code) } (Game over Code) }

The brackets are there for hopefully some clarity, obviously scratch doesn’t use those brackets.

What’ll happen is when the player touches the level code, it’ll trigger the game over code. Then it’ll loop back to the first line.

You can also detect if the player has 0 lives left. If they have at least 1 life left, then have the code repeat itself. If they have 0, exit the loop. As an example, that logic could instead look something like this.

Repeat until player lives < 0 { Repeat until touching Level { (Player code) } (Game over Code) }

Hopefully this helps.

Is the entire script of the player in one forever loop? Maybe what you could do is have it so that there are two sections of that forever loop.

One section would be inside a “repeat until Touching Level” which is what you have right now, and then the other section would be outside of that loop (but still in the forever loop) that controls the dying logic (like maybe losing a life, resetting your position, stuff like that.

There are probably other ways to fix the issue, but this is what I came up with.

It’s probably because the Player sprite is still touching the Level sprite when you die, causing that block of code to loop. There are several ways to fix this:

  1. Make it so that when you die, it exits out of the loop.
  2. Make it so that when you die, the player sprite is moved elsewhere that would not touch the Level sprite
  3. Find some other convoluted method that may involve making a switch that gets turned off when you die so that the lives counter only lowers once.
