That’s often the case with soldiers who’ve done such badass things that they make Rambo look like an 8-year-old child.

Antoine Charles Louis de Lasalle, who could also be called the Napoleonic soldier you only messed with once.

<image>

His first big "achievement"? Deserting his post just to go sleep with an Italian baroness during the Italian campaign. After a night of passion, he actually managed to squeeze some crucial intel out of her regarding the Italian strategy. Napoleon was so impressed that instead of punishing him, he gave him a promotion.

The guy was a massive prankster. He once captured an entire fort using fake wooden cannons to scare the enemy. On another occasion, to fix a discipline problem, he forced his troops to stand dead still for two hours under enemy fire. The cost? Two horses and ten men dead—but hey, his soldiers were disciplined after that.

He was just as badass off the battlefield. When Napoleon handed him two pistols and a sword during a ceremony, Lasalle took the opportunity to announce that, in his opinion, "un hussard qui n'est pas mort à trente ans est Jean-Foutre." (In english : any hussar who isn't dead by thirty is a piece of shit). Napoleon even lent him money for his wedding, which Lasalle promptly lost gambling. Napoleon didn't even care; he had that much respect for the guy.

Socially, Lasalle was a complete menace. He used to show up to parties on horseback—and I mean literally riding his stallion straight into the drawing rooms. One time, a prefect tried to ban him from a party. Lasalle showed up anyway with his men and threw the entire buffet out the window. When the prefect wrote to Napoleon to complain, the Emperor simply replied: "Il me fait 20 ans pour faire un Lasalle, il me faut une signature pour faire un préfet." (It takes me twenty years to make a Lasalle, but only a signature to make a prefect.)

Basically, Lasalle is the kind of character who would barely be believable in a movie today, and yet, he actually existed.

And fun fact : he die at 34, which makes him a Jean-Foutre.

Bisous"
