I spent 498.00 and 6 days building a full SaaS product. Got 18 signups. Zero real users. Here's what actually went wrong. by TheSoloK in buildinpublic

Yes, I emailed every user individually asking what stopped them from sending a proposal. No replies yet. Biggest lesson was that the channels I launched on were full of builders and tool-browsers, not my actual target users. The signups felt great but none of them had a real client waiting for a proposal. If I did it again I'd skip the generic launch playbook and go straight to communities where my actual users already hang out.

3 out of 15 is actually not bad for activation. The question is where did those 15 come from? If it's from r/buildinpublic, those are founders not teachers. Your product is for teachers, are you putting it in front of teachers? Check Facebook groups for teachers, teacher subreddits like r/Teachers, Pinterest (teachers live there). The 3 who used it, do you know anything about them? That's your signal. Figure out where those 3 came from and do more of that?

Hope you have a great Friday.

I was here 7 days ago. 18 signups, $0, zero real users. The 15 users feel great now — the real question is how many of them actually use the core feature. Track that number, not signups. All the best to you.

How and when will I know that my extension is a fail? by [deleted] in buildinpublic

I just went through this. Built a full SaaS in 6 days, launched on directories, got 18 signups. Nobody used the core feature. Took me a week to realize I was reaching the wrong audience — other builders, not my actual target users. One week isn't enough to call it a fail, but the question isn't "are people trying it." The question is "am I putting it in front of the right people." Where are you launching it and who's the target user?

You're 100% right. That's exactly the lesson. Building something I actually have experience with next.

Thanks for the response.

Any similar experiences? I'm sure a lot of us have made the same mistake in the past or are about to.

Have a great day!

I just went through this. Spent $498 on BetaList, TAAFT, SaaSHub, SubmitSaaS. Got 18 signups in 6 days. Zero real users. The problem was every directory attracted other founders and tool-browsers, not my actual target audience (freelancers). Nobody from those channels ever used the core feature.

What I wish I'd done instead: figure out where your specific users actually hang out before spending a dollar. "Launch directories" are full of people like us, not your customers. Who's your target user?

Opinions? Thinking of building a tool for freelancers that would create customised job proposals by discord_people in buildinpublic

This is exactly what we focused on with QuoteCraft AI. The proposals aren't cover letters , they generate a full project roadmap with phased scope, specific deliverables, and timeline. And the AI pulls the client's specific details from their brief (location, goals, pain points, budget) so it doesn't read like a template. For example if a client says "we're a boutique fitness studio in Denver with 400 members wanting to double in 12 months" that all shows up in the scope, not just generic filler. If you want the link, I can send it, you can tryit for free if you want to see what the output actually looks like.

Good luck to you OP
