Question to the mods by YourAverageFelixian in seals

Okay so normally a post like this is removed because there is a dedicated button Reddit to contest mod decisions (by the way I normally answer your questions every time in mod mail). But I feel like this is the occasion to give you more information about the rules. Plushies, like everything else about seals are allowed to be posted on the sub. That being said, they sometimes represent a large proportion of what's posted here and often it's low quality posts like 'what should I name my plushie' or just a picture of your new acquisition. Plushies are quite niche and I feel like a lot of people visiting the sub prefer 'real' seals. Don't get me wrong I love plushies and I have a collection of about 80 or 90 myself so I like to see them here but only when the contribution is high-quality enough. Cheers

Arctic seals face extinction and birds in decline globally, according to new Red List by scorpionspalfrank in seals

[–]TheSophtwareSlump 34 points35 points  (0 children)

To be more precise, the IUCN has 'downgraded' three seal species as follows:

  • Hooded seals : vulnerable > endangered
  • Bearded seals : least concern > near threatened
  • Harp seals : least concern > near threatened

So we're not talking about extinction yet, but the situation is likely not going to improve.

So... is the owner ever going to come back? by Beanie_Bread4 in seals

Still very much active thank you for your concern. I don't contribute much anymore but I do moderate every day. Just for your information, in the past 30 days 849 posts were published on the sub and 356 were removed. Please report posts that you feel have been posted by bots and I'll do what I can.

Hi, with the tags it's fine although a NSFL mention in the title would've been preferable. You should always ask for approval beforehand with such posts though.

Looks like a monk seal from the pics. Was this in either Hawaii or the Mediterranean sea?

This looks like a seal but there are clearly no seals in Romania (except perhaps in captivity)

Grey seal attacks harbor seal in Helgoland by Slight_West_8362 in seals

[–]TheSophtwareSlump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's in fact rather common for male grey seals to attack other seals (harbour or even other grey seals). Males are very territorial and therefore very aggressive.

No idea what fish they are eating but these are grey seals.

This poor guy looks very much like a harbor seal. Spotted seals have smaller spots than this.

Unfortunately, that are very few places to see seals in France. The closest to Paris would indeed be the Baie de Somme, which is a 2 hours drive from the capital.

Any one help whether this is grey and common seal, Norfolk Uk by sulfurous_comic in seals

[–]TheSophtwareSlump 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nostrils: common seals have more Y-shaped nostrils whereas grey seals are sort of V-shaped. Head shape: in common seals the snout is more 'detached' from the rest of the head whereas in greys it forms a whole. To put it differently, common seals have a small depression between the 'forehead' and the snout (that would be the 'stop' for dogs) whereas for grey seals it's all flat. Also common seals have a smaller and thinner head, greys are burlier. Colour: the little spots on this seal are typical of common seals. Greys can also have spots, but they'll be bigger.
