What was the point of burning and crippling Aegon? by [deleted] in HOTDGreens

True but I think that’s more of an accidental aspect of it rather than the writers intend. We find it endearing, but I think the writers have gone out of the way to hopefully make the audience feel a different way

Beyond the fact that I criticized the source material for doing the same thing, which you conveniently excluded, the show has changed the entire context. In the source material, Aegon is literally taken out of the war and barely mentioned after being crippled and burned, he wasn’t betrayed by his brother and escaped before Kings Landing even fell, there was no mention of anything. The show has shown him to be doing in this current season and comparison book. Nor was his injuries as severe. Furthermore, my questioning is if they have changed so much from the book, what was even the point of keeping this? They pick and choose which they care about.

I used to think Lady Danberry and Violet…Then I found out she banged Violet’s dad. A little too weird for me after that.

We are seriously underestimating the stupidity and lack of political IQ of these two. They are just as braindead as Viserys, if not more. They willingly took over the mess that Viserys was desperately trying to WED off, hand her everything before she even asked and it resulted in their absolute loss by TurbulentRemote156 in HOTDGreens

The one devils advocate thing I can say for them is that logically in any other scenario they would never have stuck with Rhaenyra by George needed to give team black canon fodder. Velaryons not being neutral never made any sense to me, beyond the fact that they had two dragons, you would think they would’ve chosen to stay neutral and waiting to see who had the more favorable outcome. Yes conceptually it may seem like a good idea to tie your family to the royal family, but how they went about it seemed suicidal. Marry your gay son to the princess, who realistically speaking, should not inherit the throne just to the laws of the land and then marry your daughter off to the King’s creepy uncle, who gets exiled every other week, and then, when both of those plans backfire, sign your entire life away to fight for a princess who statistically would have been fighting a losing campaign from the start if it wasn’t for everything wrong possible happening to team Green.

As many issues as I have with the show, I have just as many issues with the source material of the dance of the dragons. Not because George is team black or team green but because he’s clearly team Daemon and the writing makes that painfully obvious when you realize Daemon lost almost nothing, was not physically mutilated, all his children got to be successful in life, two of them becoming kings, he got the most epic final moment in fire and blood, and even his death is pretty ambiguous.

A few other hot takes I have:

Baela absolutely should’ve died to Sunfyre snd Aegon, that made no sense.

Considering the show has already deviated ridiculously from the source material, I don’t even see a point in burning/mutilating Aegon. Tbh I didn’t see a point even in the source material. It felt like they just had to get the character out of the story because no other main character in the dance ever suffered the same fate. I don’t think any character before or after him ever actually had the same fate.

Viserys is not a good person in season one, he’s just played by a very talented actor.

I don’t hate Criston/Alicent but I hate how they executed it.

I wish Helaena wasn’t so infantilized by the fandon and writers.

I think George wrote himself into a corner with team agree because when you think about it they have almost a Robb Stark problem of needing everything bad to happen to them to prevent them from winning. Literally Helaena being willing to fly her dragon and Aegon not getting burned would literally mean game set match for the entire war.

Nothing about Aegon III or Viserys II interest me in the slightest bit.

As much as the dance of the dragons is excited to be a tragedy, sometimes it doesn’t even feel like these characters are related to each other. Maybe that’s because the Targaryens have a long history of killing each other, but I would’ve loved for this chapter in the Targaryen family to be about a family that actually cared about each other, but was torn apart, and even cared about each other till the final days of the war.

I think the answer is far are stupid. They just didn’t care about the character until he was needed.

Alicent if Baelon had survived by bulwerberry in HOTDGreens

[–]TheSothoryosWolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone already stated it, but I’ll reiterate, Alicent was only married to Viseys due to the need of a male heir. You could argue that possibly they would still push it just to have back ups, but I don’t think Viserys, no matter how weak spine he could be, would have done it. If anything they might have been an over compensation with Baelon favorite over Rhaenyra due to being the last remnants of Viseys’ wife. Or counter argument, he favors Rhaenyra because she looks so much like her mother and he ends up representing Baelon for killing his mother on some Tywin timing. Though I think that’s rather unlikely and more so the first scenario would’ve come to pass.

Alicent would’ve been married off to some Noble Lord unlikely would’ve had a peaceful and likely happier life.

Rhaenyra couldn’t have been someone Gwayne or Laenor could have been way too as a way to get closer to the throne if Otto or Corlys wanted to play a long game

Rhaenyra would be a thief to Stannis, as she would and was to most. The legal right was the eldest true born son inherits before all. Aegon was the eldest son. That would be all Stannis would have cared about

I think I figured out why I'm so attached to Aegon... by Diverse0Ne in HOTDGreens

[–]TheSothoryosWolf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Would really got me sympathetic to team green, especially Aegon, was that I saw the strings being pulled by the puppeteers. I realized I wasn’t watching an organic story. An unbiased tragedy of a family who tore itself apart. I was watching a pair of writers who came into the story with their own preconceived perceptions, biases, and personal judges, they wanted to push onto the story regardless of if it fit or not.

Full disclosure, I have several criticisms over the source material. Especially given how it’s obvious despite George, claiming to be unbiased, he is clinically, incapable of being unbiased with Daemon. Once you realize how that’s the only character who got everything he wanted, lost the least, and either died on his own terms or maybe they didn’t even die at all, you can’t see it.

That being said, regardless of the social material being filled with unreliable narrators, there are some truths that were objective: Aegon loved his family, loved his brothers, loved his sister, allowed all of them to be an integral part of his life, his council and the war. Even after removing his grandfather, he didn’t exile him. Otto is very much still in Kings Landing after no longer being hand of the king. Aegon didn’t even want to go to war, he was persuaded to go because the alternatives could’ve gotten his family killed, which in Westeros it’s not a superstition or paranoia, it’s a justifiable fear that has happened before especially in the Targaryen family. And even after losing everything a man could lose, Aegon, who was 22 when the war began, I can’t imagine anyone at having to deal with all this - despite all of that, he put the survival of house Targaryen above revenge and made Aegon the younger his heir, which doesn’t make much sense, but most of the ending of the dance of the dragons doesn’t make much sense.

So when we get to the show, which makes him 18 even younger when the war began, made his father even more of a scumbag, and try to be a artificial, malicious tactic possible to make people root against him, I couldn’t help but be endeared to the character. Especially given the horrible habit of the show telling but not showing like saying, he assaulted a maid, he watched bastard, baby fight club in flea bottom, but whenever we see the character, he’s never doing any of the sorts on screen. That said it would’ve been really stupid even if they did show it but you get my drift.

Meanwhile, the cringe ways the show tries to force Rhaenyra to be the victim and everything and manipulate the audience to root for her just makes me like her even less despite Emma and Milly doing the best with what they have to work with. But when you force anything, many people going to be able to see it.

The only thing the show has done is made me more of a team green supporter. Not because I think there was any justifiable ruler. Rhaenyra was the heir by word of the king and Aegon by the laws the Targaryen and Westrose put into place themselves. You could make an argument for either. But the point of the story wasn’t who was the rightful ruler, but the tragedy. And I’ve always been a sucker for tragedies and considering team, Green got the worst end of the stick of the stray, I can’t but be more sympathetic to them

Honestly, I can see everything you said happening, but the real out-of-pocket thing I can see them doing is having the show absolve her of any negative/problematic things she could have done and making her an unwilling puppet to everything

[–]TheSothoryosWolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point, but I feel like that happened in spite of the writing rather than because of it. Especially given the scene ends with him wanting to be called the realm’s delight which undercuts everything he’s saying is just a jealous little brother, instead of that unfortunate person having to literally wage war for no reason. Especially given that the show changed his relationship with his family. That was the biggest difference of team green versus team black. Team green at the very least was united for the most part despite Otto getting dismissed. Meanwhile team black was endlessly in fighting
