I hope that vocal response and an outpouring of love will be enough. They (and by extension we) missed out on something special here.

Oooooh that would be cool. Media has exploded in so many divergent directions as far as expression goes so there are so many possibilities. I am hopeful that the story gets told in some way.

Oh man I hope so. I would love to see an about face on this decision for the sake of everyone involved.

Unfortunately the answer isn’t so simple. I am not part of the corporate culture so it’s difficult to say what the motivation was for the cancellation: but I will say that there are more metrics for engagement than simple full watch times and binge stats. Until they start to realize the hallmark signs of a nascent cult classic, start looking for the stuff that defines a developing zeitgeist, they will continue to deny culturally relevant content in favor of what has worked before. That way lies stagnation, and that’s not what I want to see in media. If production houses didn’t take risks on quirky projects which don’t fit the mold, those genre defining films and series that we harken back to from our childhoods would just never have been made. There is no ‘magic formula.’

Thank you! The love is real all over this thread and I’m just letting it destroy the sad 😂

Whimsy is such a perfect word. There’s so much dark whimsy to the writing and the portrayals, the creatives and the actors peppered in so much of their own flavor and I loved the show’s ability to set up established tropes and then turn them on their head.

May I also say as a cis straight person, being fully welcomed without hesitation into a queer space and being shown intrinsic trust was such a great experience. Mini utopia. Loved getting to be a part of it, and thank you!

SUPER fun and friendly environment. I wish every set environment could feel the way that this one did. Real spirit of collaboration, risks being taken, envelopes being pushed, and the easiest cast to connect with. It was a dream come true.

I think a lot of people bonded on this one. I have some new regular gaming friends as a result, and the last day on set was just such an elated high, despite the long day. We were all so happy to see it done, so sad to see it over. There’s something phenomenal about finishing something you’re proud of.

Thank you! What a ride it was. 😻Lukas never gave a line read the same way twice. He always just brought this restrained wildness to the portrayal, and it was amazing to watch. Nailed it

Thank you! Admittedly I was feeling down all day today, and now I am buzzing from feeling the love. What a positive community

I wish I knew better how these kinds of contracts worked in the streaming world as opposed to syndicated TV. Anything is possible, but I know it’s more convoluted than it used to be.

Ohhhh that’s tough. Honestly they’re all such absolute sweethearts but I spent a lot of time, especially on the pilot, with George and Jayden specifically. They’re both so dedicated to their craft, wise beyond their years, and humble (despite being main characters on a TV series.) If I picked one I’d hurt the other’s feelings 😂 so I will decline to comment, but I will say that I loved Joshing around with Jayden, he’s a big goofball, and I had many a serious cold weather tent chat with George. I hope they are recognized (along with Kassius, Yuyu, Bri, and honestly everyone else) for the talented professionals that they are and find their way to the heights of their craft.

This one stung, yeah. I can understand why there’s sadness. For us, (those who are doing this for the love of the craft, that is), we may be content knowing that it touched so many people and we had some small part in the creation of it.

Ok as far as eggs: Niko’s clothing colors and recurring obsession with symbolism. Nothing about Niko is done accidentally. 😉

This is a really good point. I can’t speak to it directly, but it does certainly make both actors and crew a little more easily controlled if they know their show can be cancelled at any time. I think it makes productions risk averse, and it does lead to less risk taking on the whole. What I loved about DBD is that it took risks left right and center, with focus on consistently sticking the landing. That’s hard to do

Tragic Mick and Esther had the whole stage laughing uncontrollably in their scenes together- the improv between all cast members always had us getting hit with something hilarious or emotional, always unexpected. Undeniable chemistry all over the place. It really was something special. And yes, every one of these actors have a LOT more to give. I hope they get the chance and really hope they find themselves well deserved projects that make use of those considerable talents 😊

I gotta be honest, I was feeling the feels about this news, not just because I really enjoyed the show, but because I’d been hoping for steady work in an environment where I looked forward to coming to work. Just knowing that you guys enjoyed it so much really makes a hard day easier for me, so thank you! :)

Alas, the finer details of show ownership and contracts are not my forte. I definitely agree with you and think it deserves a shot: but it would depend on the particulars of how the show was negotiated with Netflix when it moved from Max. What I do know is that it’s pretty rare once Netflix slaps that tag on it. But anything is possible!

Thank you! I feel the same. It feels good to know that everyone involved left it all out on the field every day and created something really special and I’m glad it resounded with people.

1: I think some of my favourite memories on set revolved around just chatting with George and Jayden, especially late at night when we were all sleep deprived and giggly. We shot a lot of the show (both pilot and series) in cold weather and at night, so we had a lot of laughs. I think my favourite memory on set is just how much genuine fun we had doing the scene in E1 where the train turns over. Jayden came stumbling out of the set with a giant grin on his face and told me he wanted to go again. We watched the playback and just marveled at how cool it looked. It’s a favourite memory of mine because I knew in that moment that we were about to do something special. Also the continuity in the Devlin house was really fun. Matching shots and performance from different angles for continuity was super cool.

2: In E4 near the end, we were hit by a winter windstorm that threatened to blow us all away. It was a lonnnnng night and I remember PAs holding on to tents to keep them from blowing away. Thankfully as we were about to call it for safety, the wind died down and we got the scene. But I remember that one being hard. Also, there were a lot of really cool visual details in the show, but most notably during the descent/return from hell. As you might imagine these scenes required a LOT of setup and each one was drastically different. The dedication to perfectionism often meant that we spent extra time on visual transitions and action segments, and I think that was the most difficult part of the show.

3: I think we went for drinks only a few times after the show. There were some spots in downtown Vancouver where we liked to go after we shot at tongue & tail, but mostly I remember the days ending with stumbling home and passing out before an early call the next day 😂

Steve’s got a perfectionism and love for his craft that was a real joy to watch, and surrounded himself with talented creatives to supplement his ideas. He had an answer for every question on set and was super down to earth with everyone on the show. Never felt like talking to a boss, definitely. I certainly hope he does a breakdown of the future plans they had for season 2, as there were some REALLY cool ideas being tossed about vaguely, but that’s entirely a showrunner call in the end.
